For better or for worse, today’s society has become infatuated with technology. Neil Postman, in his book, Amusing Ourselves to Death explores many examples of this phenomenon. Technology traps society because of the addiction it forms, such as television and phones. Computers traps those who can’t afford the technology to purchase one. The Internet and social media have enhanced the spread of fake news, trapping society into believing false stories. Television is one form of technology that has a strong hold on society. There is a reason why Best Buys are never seen going out of business. Americans are obsessed with watching TV in their homes. Television is so popular it has become central to American culture. Americans watch their beloved football, cooking shows, reality shows, all through one medium of technology. It’s impossible to talk about entertainment without mentioning television. One specific age group is especially trapped by the phones, teenagers. Pre-teenagers and teens across America have an addiction. This addiction isn’t to drugs or alcohol, but to phones. At La Salle, if a student isn’t in class or doing homework, more often than not, they are on their phones. Instead of talking with classmates, students prefer to bury their heads in their phones. Social media and phones were supposed to combine to bring the world closer together, and improve communication with each other, unfortunately it had the opposite effect. A great example that humans have become more anti-social is the rise of online dating. Many people substitute calling someone on the phone for actually talking face-to-face. For example, families instead of visiting their grandparents, call them on the phone instead.
