Nickel and Dimed book Response Nickel and Dimed, by Barbara Ehrenreich was a very thought provoking book to read. The author spent a year of her life working several low paying jobs, and staying in low quality facilities. She hoped to share year long journey with the world in order to show how these types of workers live and how they are viewed by the upper class. After reading this book, I learned many things from the author and made connections to my own life. This book also helped me look at businesses in a different way.
One thing I took away from this book was that you should not group all low income people into the same category. The author described several conversations she had with her temporary coworkers in the book, and each individual had a different story. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, and everyone is going through different life situations, so it is extremely unfair to group all low income people into the same category. Many low
I was surprised that Barbara Ehrenreich predicted in her evaluation that someday low paid workers would rise up. Recently there have been strikes going on at businesses, such as McDonalds, where workers are asking for more money. I’m glad that these individuals feel like they have a voice, and I hope that their grievances are heard. I hope that financially well off individuals have read this book and can see that these workers are simply asking for more money, so that they can live a better life. I admire Barbara for giving up her a year of her “normal” life to see how other people live. I believe that being in new surroundings and out of your comfort zone make you grow as a person.
