The book I chose to read is called, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by: Richard Louv. I chose this book for a few different reasons. One reason I chose this book was because I’ m highly interested in the whole concept of the book and feel very passionate about its reasoning. I also thought it would be a great read to guide me towards a topic for my main project at the end of the Lemelson program. On the plus side, I “read” this book through audible, which enabled me to listed to the book on my drive to and from work everyday. Gardner’s 8 intelligences, with the 8th one just recently being added to the intelligences, stated as “nature smart’. The core of this intelligence is the ability to recognize parts of the natural world such as plants, animals, clouds and rocks. He believes that this is not an intelligence that only certain nature girls or nature boys can achieve. This is an intelligence that all humans innately have. Although is hikjacked by the need to deal with the world of man-made objects. In the first chapter of this book this theory is supported by a statement from a research project that was conducted by the author in the 1980s; the author interviewed over three thousand children and parents throughout the country in urban, suburban and rural areas. Silicon faith is a term defining that public education is completely immersed and mesmerized by the focus on high technology (Electronics & Computers). The importance of electronics and computers, aka:technology in the classroom has created an overdependence on them and displaces other resources in the classroom such as arts and science/nature. (pg. 137) Ecophobia is described as teachers not taking advantage of the environment that surrounds the classroom but instead teaching the class about a far off ecosystem such as the rainforest. How to conserve the rainforest and how they can prevent the world’s problems. It is good to talk about this and educate them but, with this being the only form of science education, students then make the connection. That the natural world is only connected to fear of the apocalypse, not joy and wonder. With this form off teaching the students are lacking direct experience with nature and the ability to explore nature’s beauty. “The Lost Children of Wilder” is a book about how the foster care system failed to give children of color the facilities that would help them lead a somewhat normal and protected life. The story of Shirley Wilder is a sad one once you find out what kind of life she had to live when she was a young girl. Having no mother and rejected by her father she has become a troubled girl.
Throughout the centuries, technology has been advancing nonstop. Whether it be a television, some gunpowder, or even a watch, humans keep on creating more contraptions. However, accompanying these inventions is the increasing separation between mankind and the world. As Richard Louv discusses in a passage from Last Child in the Woods, scientists and researchers continue to invent technologies that they claim to better connect humans and nature, although in reality, they are doing the opposite. In the passage, Louv debates against these technologies with the use of anecdotes, imagery, and anaphoras.
Human intelligence is an eel-like subject: slippery, difficult to grasp, and almost impossible to get straight . Many scientist and psychologist have made numerous attempts to come up with an explanation for the development of human intelligence. For many years, there has been much controversy over what intelligence is and whether it is hereditary or nurtured by the environment. Webster's dictionary defines intelligence as "the ability to acquire and apply knowledge; which includes a sensing an environment and reaching conclusions about the state of that environment . In this paper I am going to examine the factors, which make up ones intelligence. I will be investigating whether or not intelligence is fostered by genetic heritance or nurtured by ones environment.
Psychologists Howard Gardner and Robert Sternberg were recognized as being exceptional from an early age. Having similar theories of intelligence, they both believe in a broader definition of intelligence than traditionally recognized. Both conclude there are far more complex functions involved. While learning of Gardner and Sternberg I found that in my own experiences follow examples of Sternberg's theory there is a definitions by Sternberg of intelligence states: “Intelligent behavior involves adapting to your environment, changing your environment, or selecting a better environment.” When I enrolled in school again after 10 years I found myself evaluating what I needed to change to in my enviroment to be successful in school. Intelligent Quotient, or IQ score, is a measure of mental ability. It plays a major role in how individuals’ lives play out. It can be accredited for everything from personality to interests to occupation. The main debate when it comes to the subject of IQ is how a person’s score is influenced by environment and heredity. There are many theories on the matter. Some state that either heredity or environment exclusively determines IQ. Others believe that a person’s score is a result of the two. In this paper, we will analyze all of these theories and prove that while heredity plays a much greater role, they both have a very notable influence.
As a teacher it will always be my responsibility to keep up to date on new research done on learning theories. That way I am able to provide a fun and exciting learning environment for my students. After learning about Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences I now realize how important it is to make sure I work hard to include every child into my curriculum. Gardner’s theory is that everyone is able to recognize a student that does scores great on an exam is smart, that does not mean that a student that falls short of doing good on the same test is not as brilliant as the other student. Howard Gardner’s, theory opposes traditional methods that view intelligences as unitary, and perceives intelligence to contain eight domains. Gardner believes there is several different intelligences that each person embodies in certain magnitudes. Having more of a particular intelligence than another will change has each person retain information. As a child growing up in public elementary schools, I was taught from a traditional methods. These methods focused mainly on verbal and mathematical skills. If a student is anyone of the other six proposed intelligences, he or she would most likely do unsatisfactorily in school. Howard Gardner’s eight intelligences are: body/ kinesthetic, naturalist, visual/ spatial, musical/ rhythmic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, verbal/ linguistic, and logical/ mathematical.
Throughout history, psychologists have made hundreds of attempts to define intelligence and measure it precisely. However, none of these attempts have been accepted by all because Intelligence is so broad. Intelligence has been defined by many things, by Weschler, who made the most used psychological test today, as “the global capacity of a person to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with his environment.” However, while he may have created the most successful test, his definition is not the only definition of intelligence, for psychologists such as Gardner, believed that there was more than just knowledge to intelligence, and Sternberg, who defined intelligence as “mental activity directed toward purposive adaptation to, selection and shaping of, real-world environments relevant to one’s life.” Intelligences has been measured in a variety of ways throughout psychologists, however because intelligence is such a broad concept, there is no single definition and method of testing it.
For my book I chose to read The Body by Stephen King. This novel is about four young boys taking a journey to find a body somewhere in the woods that is at the county line. This story is about more than just four boys going on an adventure its about them becoming closer to each other and learning real life lessons along the way. The four boys are all going into their first year of middle school so this is a time in their life when they learn things that will help them in life.

The true nature of intelligence has been debated more intensely then ever over the last century. As the science of psychology has developed one of the biggest questions it had to answer concerned the nature of Intelligence. Some of the definitions that have been given for intelligence have been the ability to adjust to one’s environment. Of course by such a definition even a person who is generally considered to be dull can be regarded as being intelligent if he can take care of himself. Other definition is such as having the tendency to analyze things around yourself. However it can be argued that such behavior can lead to over-analyzing things and not reacting to one’s environment and dealing with it in an intelligent manner.
Many theories explain intelligence. Cattell, Gardener, Sternberg, Galton, & Spearman are just a few of those theorists. Intelligence is a wide scope and will be seen throughout this research paper. ‘‘Intelligence is the ability or abilities to acquire and use knowledge for solving problems and adapting to the world’’ (Woolfolk,1998).

I choose to read the book “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker. The book talks about the life of an African-American lady by the name of Celie that lived in the southern United States in the late 1930s. It addresses the numerous issues that included the low ranking of American social culture. In the book it talks about how she wrote books to God because the father she had would beat her and rape her. He also got her pregnant and then she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Her father end up taking the baby shortly after birth.

When Howard Gardner developed these theories, he did so in hoping to broaden the word "intelligence". Many professors have been able to use this information to help exceed in their own studies. The mind gives us the ability to exceed beyond expectations. Some people are lucky to be born with one or more of these intelligences, but for others they tend to perfect these traits over time.
