The human being is comprised of two entities: mind and body, which are equally important. One cannot survive without the other and are dependent on each other for optimum functioning of an individual. For complete growth and development, the two must grow simultaneously and proportionally. This means none is more important than the other and they both must be treated with the same consideration as far as growth is concerned. The modern society however, seems to be in the dark about this or rather it tends to overlook the body aspect of development.
The youth especially are so engrossed in education (mental growth) that they compromise on body development. Are high school sports beneficial or non-beneficial for students? I personally believe if a student is in a high school sport they’re forced to prioritize between school and their sport, and at a young age I believe the student would decide to use his time to improve in his sport instead of school. Which in the long run would affect his academics, unless they decide to stay up late and work on their homework to keep up with both school and their sport. But, even like that in time the lack of sleep would catch up to them, and cause them to do even worse in both academics, and sports. High school sports are like the lotto in my opinion, many play but only a few get rewarded for their work. Therefore, high school sports cause more negativity than positivity.
In addition to the lack of rest, high commitment competitive sports require children to give up school time to further themselves in their sport. Nowadays, there is an abundance of sporting events that are scheduled either during school, or during a time of day that requires children to miss some school in order to make the event on time. Scheduling sporting events during a time that requires students to miss school promotes that sports is more important than their schooling. I spoke with my friend Emilie Hawks, who has been a competitive soccer player (for both club and high school) for 14 years about her different tournaments that have caused her to miss a lot of school. “I first time I remember missing school for soccer was for a tournament in third grade. From personal experience, I know that when I have sports practice, it is much easier to concentrate, try hard, and get school work done a certain amount of time. The key is finding a balance. With the development of the industrial revolution and the creation of the first public schools, sports decreased in violence and were played more recreationally and constructively. Some of my best childhood memories involve playing in a basketball game as a kid with my parents watching. The lessons and experiences I gained from playing sports are invaluable.
