What activities have you participated in during the last two years in school, church and/or your community? Include sports, service and other activities. During the last two years I have participated in many activities in school, in church, and in my community. I love helping others and being involved; it makes me feel like I am a part of something bigger than me. In school, I am involved in many extra-curricular activities. I was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) this year. We meet once a month to plan events to raise money for the school and the community. Participating in NJHS has taught me to work with students and teachers to plan events. For the past two semesters, I have been on milk duty for the Lower Grade Center. This has taught me to be responsible since I have to get up early every day so that the kids have milk for lunch. This year I was able to help with the Extended Day Program (EDP) after school. Last semester, I planned my first outreach event at the church. We had bounce houses, face painting, food, games, and candy. I worked so hard to get this put together and even members of the church used their own money to purchase things to make this event happened. There was door to door evangelizing going on in the surrounding neighborhoods to get the word out, and there were only two people in the community that showed up. Two people.
Later that year, I was accepted into Spanish Honors Society, a volunteer based program to help out the Spanish communities near my school along with volunteering to help raise money for organizations that help less developed countries. One particular project that I helped raise money for through Spanish Honors Society, was Project Running Waters. The money raised for this event was donated to help people living in Guatemala receive fresh water through pipe systems that would be built. We raised over one thousand dollars to donate to this cause. Knowing that I can positively impact individuals in my community and in other countries makes me feel like I have grown maturely and am able to understand what needs to be done to make a difference to
In the past, I have volunteered for our bands fundraiser every Christmas, which we host at our high school. It is a unique moment in time, to see the joy of children's faces as they walk into the school that morning for Breakfast with Santa. Being able to put on a performance for those children that morning brings joy to my heart and keeps me coming back each year. Another event is the Special Olympics held in Houghton Lake. Students from our school every year go and help setup and run the Special Olympics. Helping out and getting to talk to participants is an honor and has created new relationships with people. I want to be able to give even more back to my wonderful community through the National Honor Society by volunteering and helping as much as I can. My first experience that involved contribution to a community was in an organization known as girls as pearls. In this organization we participated in many volunteer activities, both domestic and global such as making dresses for girls in africa or volunteering at the samaritan ministry. Consequently, this early volunteerism experience influenced my involvement in the community as a high school student. I became involved in organizations such as key club, an organization focused in volunteerism. Additionally, I began to tutor middle school students and volunteering at the local church. Many of the volunteer activities that I have participate in involved children and this due to the reason that I want to be able to become a positive guide and role model for children. I want to contribute to their motivation of continuing their education and to reach for goals that they believe they can achieve. I volunteer in a lot of activities, especially considering I am a girl scout. We organize many drives for things such as food and sports equipment and everybody enjoys themselves while doing it. I volunteer at church sometimes, contributing my time to making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry, instead of doing pointless things at home. Being a good person isn’t just about being kind to everyone around you. You have to put those great things about you into use and help your community. That’s what makes you a great choice for the National Junior Honor Society.
During the first two years of high school, I volunteered for various clubs to discover my interests. At the time, clubs seemed similar to hobbies that American teenagers enjoy to pursue rather than develop practical skills. Reaching my second year, I joined the Kaiser Junior volunteering program after unexpectedly running into volunteers during a visit at Kaiser, and it left a warming impression that inspired me to sign up for the program. I vowed to work as hard as my peers and past volunteers, who achieved many recognitions and honorable pins. With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
The National Honor Society is based off of four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. School is an extremely important part of anyone’s life, and I feel blessed that I have had the opportunity to attend Lutheran schools from Kindergarten until the present. Our Shepherd Lutheran and Lutheran High Northwest have helped me to grow in my faith and to continue to grow academically as well. Attending these schools has also allowed me to participate in many different extra-curricular activities such as Varsity Soccer in my freshman year, Varsity Track my sophomore year, Pit Band for school musicals, Jazz band, and Pep band. This 2009-2010 school year I also have the opportunity to be the First Chair Flute and Piccolo in regular Concert Band and the other band functions which will provide me with an opportunity to gain experience in leadership which will help me in college and in my future career. Service is an important activity to participate in. During the past two years I have helped my mom and the rest of the committee at my church with funeral luncheons. When there is a funeral at my church the family of the deceased has the option of having a luncheon at the church, and if they choose, following the funeral, the committee that my mom is on takes care of getting the food that the family wants, serving the food, and then cleaning up after the luncheon is over. When they need help I also go and help out. Also, my family recently became a Foster family for the Michigan Humane Society. In November of this year, I am going on a mission trip to Madrid, Spain, with my cousin, who is a pastor, and a group from his church, Valley Springs, in Roseville, California. Our main aim is going to be talking to the college students there and trying to plant churches. We are going to be helping them work on their English, and I will get to use my Spanish. I have also had the opportunity to work in the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer nursery which was my first paying job. Every Sunday morning I am in the nursery from 9 until 12, or later if needed, watching peoples children up to four years of age while they attend church.
I find myself extremely passionate in Community Service, I have volunteered at Emmanuel Apostolic Church during Vacation Bible School for the past two summers, preparing food, coming up with creative ideas to keep children occupied, and making sure children are safe. During this time my leadership and conversational skills have strengthened. In addition to that, I have also volunteered there on numerous occasions to feed the homeless. In high school, I also volunteered at an Elderly home on bingo night to interact with the elderly, gave a listening ear, it was extremely rewarding to see them smile, laugh, and interact with me as if they had known me for a while; that showed me how much they appreciate having company. This year I have served 74 hours for Learner Leadership Council, 27 hours for National Charity League and 17 hours for New Tech High at Coppell. One of my favorite places to volunteer is at Cornerstone Closet where homeless adults come to get needed items and take showers. We get to help them find clothes, and necessities and spend time talking with them. Another organization that I spend a great deal of time serving in the summertime is Metrocrest. We put together the food backpacks for families through the Backpack Summer Hunger Project. These organizations reach out to other organizations and charities and assist with acts of service. Even on campus I have been able to serve others. Being a NTH@C Tour Ambassador has been an important way for me to give back to my school. I enjoy showing others our learning environment and the importance of what happens each day. By attending clubs on campus is also another way that I feel is a pertinent way to serve alongside others and celebrate their passions. Over the four years that I have spent at Good Counsel, I became part of many activities. Each helping me evolve as a person and become stronger yet. Simple lists could be made of every activity that I have ever been involved in but it could never express to a person what I have learned and how it helped me to grow. Every environmental club, science club, political science club, service work, and S.A.D.D. club I was part of had a very special message to deliver to me. Whether the message was one of responsibility, or a life lesson, I grew from it. The Political Science club opened me to many new experiences. It allowed me the chance to attend the Model U.N., where I was asked to address today's top world issues. This club was very beneficial to me because I was exposed to topics and ideas that I had not previously been able to discuss or learn about in a classroom situation. The science club allowed for me to experience extra educational situations as well. I took part in a hovercraft competition, which was very educational while also allowing me the chance to work with others for a common goal.
As a student, I am an active participant in my academic and extracurricular activities. My first priority has always been to make good grades and learn in school. Although this is important to me, I also know that by participating in clubs, sports, and after school activities, I will become a well-rounded student. During the past years of my high school career I have participated and received awards in the following: Cheerleading (eight years), twice as captain, '97 -'98 Varsity Letter in Cheerleading, '98 AIM scholar, Who's Who Among American Cheerleaders, and '98 Academic Excellence Award while participating in Virginia High School League Interscholastic Activities. I also belonged to the following clubs: S.A.D.D. club (two years), second year as secretary, Pep Club, Varsity Club, Choir Club, and Computer Club. In the year '99 -'00 I received awards in the following classes: Computer Applications, Spanish I, World Geography, and Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry. I also received an award for Most Encouraging Student. I currently belong to the Hiking and Outdoor Club, Ski Club, Pep Club, and Environmental Awareness Club. In addition, this year I participate in a program called Read With A Friend. In this program I, along with a group of other students, go to the near by elementary school to read to a class of students from kindergarten to fifth grade.
There is something about helping other people, or the community in general, that I love. I did well above the amount of community service needed to apply for the National Honor Society, and I did it all because I like to do it. I have been doing community service since I was about eight or nine years old, and even then I was doing it because I wanted to do it. I started doing community service through the girl scouts, and after that I started doing it on my own. I have volunteered to do stuff such as helping at; cub scout day camps, park cleanups, river cleanups, community days and much more. I know that as long as I have the time to do it, I will continue to actively volunteer for the
Every day, I finished my duties while doing my absolute best. If something was not done correctly or at its best, I started from the beginning. While volunteering, I was taught responsibility. Soon, I was left with important jobs such as paperwork and filing. Thankfully, I know the alphabet, so every file was in chronological order. I dedicated time and effort. To be specific, I spent one hundred and fifty-three hours volunteering at the hospital which also provided me with an influence for the future.
I have been involved in the American Cancer Society for five years. My team, Team Hoot has raised funds for cancer as well as participating in Relay for Life each year. This year, I will be on the board committee at Relay; giving back to the survivors. This organization is one that I always promote and give back to. Also being involved in Relay for Life this year, National Honors Society is a club that helps the community. Being on the executive board, I correlate new service projects as well as corresponding with the Lee County National Honor Society chapter. Also, I am forming a new club at North Fort Myers High, Red Cross Club. Being president, Red Cross helps donates funds back to the American Red Cross. This year we are planning to donate materials for our troops as well as materials for individuals in disaster situations. Giving back to the community is very important to me.
