The evolvement of jazz throughout the years has been an interesting one. Blues and Ragtime are just two simple innovations that has allowed for many variations in the jazz genre. Both of these genres have their similarities and differences in how they influenced jazz music through: improvisation, syncopation, and experimentation. Ragtime and Blues are different in that they originated from different places. Blues developed in the south. Blues is mainly a vocal music. It was emotional, in that the earliest form was singing and hand clapping. The blues started out with slaves because they would use it to sing about their pain and problems. However, ragtime was popular among many Americans and flourished. The term “ragged time” came to be used to describe its key trait which was syncopation. Ragtime music is tuneful, but it is primarily rhythmic. Whereas a blues song can be sung freely by one person, or a chorus, without a strict rhythm, ragtime is more like a march. Blues was usually raw and improvised. Also it was simpler, easier to play. Blues pieces don 't change harmonies (chords) all that often, sometimes only three chords in a piece. However with ragtime it changes harmonies every few beats, less catchy and more difficult to execute. Ragtime also is more mechanical, favoring harmonic orthodoxy and “meticulous precision” (Monk). The meter for blues is what we refer to has the twelve bar blues. The line form for that is usually AABA. This form can be traced back to the African call-and response form, which is still evident in jazz. An example of AABA pattern would be Robert Johnson’s “Cross Road Blues which is does an amazing job at playing. Ragtime had multiple forms and themes, that were a little more complex.
