Mike Rose’s article “Blue-Collar Brilliance” talks about people judging other people’s intelligence based on their jobs. Mike Rose explains in his article that people with blue collar jobs are just as intelligent as people with white collar jobs because they both use critical thinking and multi task while they are working. The standard of their jobs might be different because of their different ways of learning. People who are considered professionals or white collared individuals learn by studying or reading reports where blue collared individuals learn by performing a task. His anecdotes presented in the article are appropriate in terms of his subject and claims. The author responds back to the naysayers by saying that people only look at the test scores earned in school, but not the actual talent. He says, “Our culture- in Cartesian fashion- separates the body from the mind, so that, for example we assume that the use of tool does not involve abstraction. We reinforce this notion by defining intelligence solely on grades in school and number on IQ tests. And we employ social biases pertaining to a person’s place on the occupational ladder” (279). The author says that instead of looking at people’s talent we judge them by their grades in school or their IQ score, and we also employ them based on these numbers. If one needs a secure future, he/she has to attend college and attain a college degree to do so. College is doing a great job in educating the students about the particular subject, but is not doing so well to get them ready for their future jobs. To be able to sustain themselves in their field of work, students have to learn with more hands on activities, which will help them develop faster ways to be able to perform tasks, and make the least amount of mistakes. If the students do make mistakes, then they should learn from them rather than think negatively about making mistakes. Colleges should prepare students to deal intellectually with their future jobs by helping them providing with internships, and talking to them about importance of volunteering in our society, so students want to volunteer rather than forced to do so. Doing so will help improve our society’s condition because we will see more people helping each other rather than being selfish. Colleges should inform students about fraudulent cases that take place in the world on a daily basis, so the students could be better consumers. Colleges need to build programs for students which helps students with their critical thinking, and so that students could surround themselves with people who want to achieve similar goals in life.
