The motif of blood in Macbeth functions to show characters’ guilty conscious through scenes such as Macbeth killing King Duncan, Banquo’s ghost appearing and when Lady Macbeth consequently kills herself because of her deeds.
Guiltiness is felt throughout the play, as many characters experience it. An example of where guilt is first felt by a character is when Macbeth kills King Duncan. Throughout the play, Macbeth strives to become King of Scotland and plans to do so regardless of what stands in his way. His wife, Lady Macbeth, is all aboard with the thought of her husband becoming King as well. King Duncan plans to stay a night at Macbeth’s castle and will leave in the morning. After Macbeth is told by the three witches that he shall be king and lets his wife know about the prophecy, Lady Macbeth wants things to get going right away. As the King arrives at the manor and they all go to sleep, Macbeth begins to contemplate the deed he plans to commit.
