If adults and children do not understand on how to use a technological device, they may not understand programming which is a growing characteristic of the digital world. Programming is used on technological devices; therefore understanding on how to use these applications is applicable. As a future teacher I will need to understand on how to use many more programs – as programs will continue to expand and develop within the teaching profession. Social networking the last characteristic discussed is a proven large component, as social networking helps to develop educational resources – which influences myself as a future educator to have a large collection of ideas to apply in my future classroom.
While many online courses integrate some form of physical interaction in hybrid courses, courses that are entirely online do not have a face to face component. While students may see your professor on video, they can’t raise their hand and get immediate feedback or lean over to their classmate and ask a question. Also, the level of interaction with their peers isn’t the same in online learning as it is in traditional classroom atmospheres. With face to face interaction they develop lifelong contacts, memories and experiences that are harder to foster in an online environment. These types of interactions humanize the educational experience in a way that online learning does not. People are comfortable with a traditional classroom structure and sometimes don’t want to deviate from it. If we have a question for our teacher we can raise our hand in class and get an immediate answer. If we turn in a paper and have a question about grades or comments, we can usually talk to the teacher and analyze body language. In online learning, it is sometimes harder to gauge effective communication and we may have to wait until our teacher reads their email. Technology properly used in the classroom has many advantages to a student’s learning. Technology can help students become more involved in their own learning process, which is not seen in the traditional classroom. It allows them to master basic skills at their own rate rather than being left behind. Teachers and students alike can connect to real life situations by using technology in the classroom; this can also help to prepare students for real world situations. Technology can be used to motivate students as well as to offer more challenging opportunities. It can also be used as a visualization tool to keep students interested in the subject that is being taught. When technology is used effectively, students have the opportunity to develop skills that they may not get without the use of technology (Cleaver, 2011). Assessing and monitoring students is easier on the teacher because of the ability to use technology in the classroom. When technology is used correctly it offers limitless resources to a classroom atmosphere.
The present study examines the satisfaction level of instructors and students from Virtual University e-learning system. The factors which affect the level of satisfaction are acceptance of this online university as learning organization, learning provisions for students, interactivity issues and instructor’s self learning from the system. Qualitative as well as quantitative information was collected from respondents. Focus group discussions were also conducted with instructors to take in-depth information regarding their satisfaction from online learning system. Results showed that satisfaction with e-learning facilities was moderate; interactivity constraints between instructors and students were highlighted by instructors as a big hurdle in providing quality of education. Students were highly satisfied with the e-learning mode as compared to their instructors. The results of the study can benefit the student, teacher and policy makers to improve quality of online education in Pakistan.
