Black vs. White, Who Wins The Fight?

Despite the generation in which an individual is born no society has escaped the wrath of racism. From the Native Americans in Jamestown to the immigrants of Ellis Island, even today racism continues with the Muslims being accused of 9-11 and other terrorist attacks. Although racism has changed from the early 1800’s to today, it is still present. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the southern town of Maycomb where the citizens struggle with racism, the meaning of courage and family status. The award winning book is told from the point of view of Scout Finch’s, a young girl growing up in the 1930’s. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee racism is displayed by two children building a snowman, the separated churches, and the Tom Robinson trial; to show that the decisions the people of Maycomb make are based on more than one’s personal views.
Snow is a rare sight in Maycomb. When the white flakes begin falling the students soon receive news of a snow day. The snow barely covers the layer of dirt making typical snow day activities difficult. There is always an abundance of soil in Maycomb, it gets thrown around, stomped on and is worthless, the dirt in Maycomb is similar to the black people, they are treated unfairly all the time. Snow, on the other hand is rare, treated delicately and never goes unnoticed, much like the white people of Maycomb. Jem and Scout want to build a snowman, but the lack of snow made it difficult to build from just their yard so they seek out Miss. Maudie to borrow her snow. Even with the Finches’ snow and Miss. Maudies’ snow the children still don’t have enough. Jem won’t let this opportunity to build his first, and maybe last snowman, go. Determined, he starts by building a base from the plentiful mu...

Racism isn’t based on one’s personal views alone, it’s so much more, Harper Lee displays racism in her award winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird by using the story of two children building a snowman, the separated churches, and the Tom Robinson Trial. Scout Finch, a young girl in the 1930s gets a front row seat to see racism around her in Harper Lee’s novel. Racism isn’t something a person born with, it’s taught by the people and events around a person. Acting racist can be any race discriminating against any other race, racism happens every day by; assuming something about someone because of their skin tone, calling people names because of their race. Racism may be a disease, but it tends to be genetic and contagious
