The film I watched in class is called "Black is Black ain 't" by Marton Riggs -a homosexual man dying of aids. Through various clips Riggs demonstrates different themes about what it "really" means to be black. During the video famous activists and ordinary African Americans spoke about how they felt on certain issues faced by the black community. These individuals clarify certain myths that are sought to portray African Americans as incompetent, aggressive people. Due to this, many African Americans have been excluded from their community for reasons such as race, color, physical feature, masculinity, sexuality, gender, culture, and speech. Also, they say to prove masculinity you must be addicted to “fucking everything is sight” otherwise, you are said to be homosexual. Cornel West is an American philosopher and activist who believes “black men buy into the stereotypes”. They began to believe the labels given to them to prove they are a man meaning not gay. Sexuality is one of the major reasons why individuals have been shunned from the black community. During the third clip someone from a church said "True niggers ain 't faggots". All of the different ingredients are used to represent the different color, physical features, culture, people and love in the community. We must come together and allow different types of people in the black community. Every gumbo pot is different that is what makes its unique. Watching this film has opened my eyes to many of the negative stereotypes that are used to portray African Americans. It is hard to say it but, we, the black people are turning these myths into reality. Unfortunately, they are consistent examples of African Americans perpetuating these negative stereotypes.The negative characteristics individuals are saying about black people are becoming the actual definition of what it means to be black. We are embodying these fallacies and becoming what the world wants to see us as, inferior to whites. As a community we must realize the box that we are consistently put into. It is commonly thought that one has to struggle in order to be black. Black people tend to have a stronger sense of group identification than any other racial group in the United States. The question is whether or not this is helpful or detrimental to the black population. In “Promoting Black (Social) Identity” Laura Papish criticizes Tommie Shelby’s We Who Are Dark. Shelby argues that the black population’s sense of group identity is vital to furthering their collective political agenda. Shelby believes that best way to make sure that their political ideologies are cohesive is for black individuals to have a “thick conception of black identity” (Papish 2).” Having a thick sense of black identity calls for “ African Americans think of themselves as and act as a ‘nation’ constituted not by physical borders, but by a shared ethnic, cultural, or biological trait that imbues the community with a ‘general will’ and this “ will” typically includes political motives (Papish 2). Papish argues that it not part of the duty of a black person to have any sense of loyalty or solidarity with other African-Americans and that not doing so does not make them any less black than those that choose to have a thick sense of black identity. Those who don’t grow up with a strong black group identity in their lives are just as black and go through some of the same struggles that other black people do. In the video “Black Like Who?” Debbie Reynolds did not have a strong sense of blackness because she was raised in a white neighbor. The other ladies in the short film talk about how they thought that she had a “ real problem with [her] ethnicity like [she] had a problem with the fact that [she] born African-American (Reynolds). Often racial injustice goes unnoticed. Television tries to influence the mind of their viewers that blacks and whites get along by putting them on the screen to act as if interracial relationships has been accepted or existent. “At the movies these days, questions about racial injustice have been amicably resolved (Harper,1995). Demott stresses that the entertainment industry put forth much effort to persuade their audience that African Americans and Caucasians are interacting and forming friendships with one another that is ideal enough for them to die for one another. In the text, Demott states “A moment later he charges the black with being a racist--with not liking whites as much as the white man likes blacks--and the two talk frankly about their racial prejudices. Near the end of the film, the men have grown so close that each volunteer to die for the other” (Harper,1995). Film after film exposes a deeper connection amongst different races. The video, A Savage Legacy: Apartheid, Jim Crow, and Racism Today, explains the concepts of discrimination, prejudice, stereotypes, cultural relativism, egocentrism, ethnocentrism. The video provides clips of the history of slavery among blacks and relates it to the racism of today. Even though there is only five genes that determines skin color, skin color continues to affect someone’s destiny.
The prejudice black gay men faced because of their race and sexuality caused a sense of hurt and pain that drove them into silence. Silence, something Riggs referred to as “the deadliest weapon,” contributed to the abundance of life that was lost due to the AIDS epidemic. By definition, intersectionality is the interconnected nature of social categories. Black gay men found themselves alienated because they fit into two social categories that were deemed inferior. Riggs internalized this inferiority and saw his black gay brethren as undesirable, explaining why he was only attracted to white men. His journey eventually lead him to accepting and loving his brethren, and in turn accepting and loving himself as a black gay man. Riggs was amongst many black gay men who came to the realization that they were worth loving and fighting for. Once these men became aware of their self-worth they could stay silent no longer, breaking the silence that had become so deadly. Riggs perfectly summed up the documentary by stating the
The film”Sankofa” and the Negro by Du Bois reflects on the ideas about the desires of African intellectuals during the 1920s and the identity crisis to the black Americans. The American society refused to offer African Americans equal rights as their white counterparts. The two sources engage the reader to ask a question as to why an individual self-esteem is affected by race. This is a troublesome issue for the blacks considering the fact that Europeans viewed them as people without practical history and have nothing to offer. The film highlights some of the primitive and exotic factors of the American society during slavery era. The Atlantic slave trade is the main feature that depicts the lives of Africans in the hands of the Europeans.
In today’s society there are many stereotypes surrounding the black community, specifically young black males. Stereotypes are not always blatantly expressed; it tends to happen subconsciously. Being born as a black male puts a target on your back before you can even make an impact on the world. Majority of these negative stereotypes come from the media, which does not always portray black males in the best light. Around the country black males are stereotyped to be violent, mischievous, disrespectful, lazy and more. Black males are seen as a threat to people of different ethnicities whether it is in the business world, interactions with law enforcement or even being in the general public. The misperceptions of black males the make it extremely difficult for us to thrive and live in modern society. Ultimately, giving us an unfair advantage simply due to the color of our skin; something of which we have no control.

Despite the progress that blacks have worked toward since the days of slavery, society continues to give in to the monetary benefits of producing self-disparaging entertainment and media. It is not only up to the directors, editors, producers and writers to establish this change, but it should also be the demand of the people, or the consumer. If the images of black people in the media are improved the outlook within the community will improve as well. Not only will positive goals and achievements become more realistic for black people if the media outlets discontinue their practice of equating blacks with aggression, lawlessness and violence, but a greater good will also result for whites, which would be represented by a true autonomy and equality in American society.
In this narrative essay, Brent Staples provides a personal account of his experiences as a black man in modern society. “Black Men and Public Space” acts as a journey for the readers to follow as Staples discovers the many societal biases against him, simply because of his skin color. The essay begins when Staples was twenty-two years old, walking the streets of Chicago late in the evening, and a woman responds to his presence with fear. Being a larger black man, he learned that he would be stereotyped by others around him as a “mugger, rapist, or worse” (135).
The aspect of African-American Studies is key to the lives of African-Americans and those involved with the welfare of the race. African-American Studies is the systematic and critical study of the multidimensional aspects of Black thought and practice in their current and historical unfolding (Karenga, 21). African-American Studies exposes students to the experiences of African-American people and others of African descent. It allows the promotion and sharing of the African-American culture. However, the concept of African-American Studies, like many other studies that focus on a specific group, gender, and/or creed, poses problems. Therefore, African-American Studies must overcome the obstacles in order to improve the state of being for African-Americans.
Despite many progressive changes, racism is still a major issue. No one is born racist, racism is taught and it is taught in popular culture. Younger generations are exposed to racism through popular culture; one of the many mediums in which racial stereotypes are still supported. Matt Seitz, in his article, “The Offensive Movie Cliche That Won’t Die” claims that metaphorically, in popular culture cinema, African-Americans are mentors of a white hero, but beneath the surface, it is racially offensive towards these mentors because they are still considered servants of whites. The movie 'Ethnic Notions' describes different ways in which African-Americans were presented during the 19th and 20th centuries. It traces and presents the evolution of the rooted stereotypes which have created prejudice towards African-Americans. This documentary movie is narrated to take the spectator back to the antebellum roots of African-American stereotypical names such as boy, girl, auntie, uncle, Sprinkling Sambo, Mammy Yams, the Salt and Pepper Shakers, etc. It does so by presenting us with multiple dehumanized characters and cartons portraying African-Americans as carefree Sambos, faithful Mammies, savage Brutes, and wide-eyed Pickaninnies. These representations of African-Americans roll across the screen in popular songs, children's rhymes, household artifacts and advertisements. These various ways to depict the African ?American society through countless decades rooted stereotypes in the American society. I think that many of these still prevail in the contemporary society, decades after the civil rights movement occurred.
In today’s society, pre-existing assumptions and stereotypes of other ethnicities and individuals play a large part in the way we see others. This social construct of stereotypes has placed restrictions on many people’s lives which ultimately limits them from achieving certain goals. In this sense, stereotypes misrepresent and restrict people of colour to gain casting within the Hollywood film industry. The issue of how casting actors to certain roles and how these actors are forced to submit and represent these false stereotypes is one worthy of discussion. White Chicks (2004), directed by Keenan Wayans, illustrates this issue through the performance of Latrell, performed by Terry Crews, and his performance of the hyper-sexualised “buck” will be a prime example in this essay to discuss the racial politics and stereotypes in Hollywood casting.
White Chicks is a popular American comedy that was released in 2004. This unforgettable movie depicts the lives of two black FBI agents, Kevin and Marcus, whom havent had any success in their careers or personal lives. As they reach rock bottom, the agents decide to take matters into their own hands. They devise a plan that requires them to diguise themselves as two famous white sisters, who are being used as bait for a local kidnapping, for the weekend. Although they reach minor and major setbacks in their strategic and risky plan, they ultimately discover the culprit of the kidnappings and return to their normal lifestyles. This film recieved outstanding but unkindly reviews but it is undoubtfully one my favorite movies.
