Televisions are giant bulletin boards designed to make viewers want what they don't have. Youth watch approximately 20,000 ads on television every year (Herr, 2007). Camera angle, lighting, actors and even music affects viewers. Everything that goes into a television ad is designed to cause the viewer to feel as if they are missing something important. Restaurant ads cause the viewer to be hungry for certain meals, by giving visuals of delicious foods. Dealership ads present advertised cars in such a way that viewers begin to compare their own car to the advertised one. A show where the characters are constantly smoking cigarettes for fun with no negative side effects, will send a signal that smoking is simply a means of entertainment and is not harmful. Some may argue that television discourages youth from smoking by present ads of what happens to someone's health when they smoke. While ads like these may help to persuade some youth, not all youth will take the ads seriously. Many will be more persuaded by the television show that is promoting cigarettes because it is designed to entertain, and youths are more influenced by media if it is entertaining. Based on what they have heard and seen, youths can also be influenced to behave inappropriately such as using unnecessary vulgar language, lying to stay out of trouble, or violence. “Extensive viewing of television violence by youth causes greater aggressiveness. Youth who view shows in which violence is very realistic, frequently repeated or unpunished, are more likely to imitate what they see" (American Academy 2011). Television can also influence youths' thoughts. Shows or movies where the adults are portrayed as idiots will send the message the adults are dumb. One show may not affect thoughts too greatly, but after watching more shows with similar messages, youths will begin thinking that adults are unintelligent and could begin to question their parents' authority.
