Describe the treatment of freedmen in the post war South provided for by the “Black Codes.” In what ways did Northern Radical Reconstructionalists attempt to counteract the Codes through Congressional legislation and constitutional amendment? Were their attempts successful? After the Civil War, South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, and other states passed a law known as the “Black Codes.” These were designed to try to keep freed African American men slaves by restricting their freedom as much as possible. Other laws were also passed, denying African Americans their basic civil rights. These laws angered Northern Republicans.
