“Nothing is as it seems. Black can appear white when the light is blinding but white loses all luster at the faintest sign of darkness.” (Christopher Pike). In the novel The Outsiders it expresses the theme nothing is as it seems. There are two major gangs- the greasers and the Socs. The greasers seem like hoods; however one group of greasers aren’t at all what they seem like. Particularly one greaser symbolizes this theme, Johnny Cade. Johnny shows nothing is as it seems because he is scared of his own shadow when inside he is a heroic role-model. Johnny is a scared, shy person from his looks, but he is filled with true courage; he did not turn from a juvenile delinquent to a hero, he was one all along. To begin with, Johnny shows nothing is as it seems because he seems like he couldn’t hurt a fly when later he kills a Soc named Bob. Although he killed someone he showed great courage because some Socs were about to drown Ponyboy, when Johnny kills Bob to save Pony’s life.
