Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes irregular stages of happiness and depression. It is characterized as a mood disorder, which is a psychological disorder categorized by the increase or decrease of a person 's mood. Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depression illness. Having this disorder will cause you to have emotional highs and lows. When you are at your “low point” you may feel depressed, sad, and desperate. When your mood shifts to your “high point” you may feel joyful and full of energy, this is known as mania or hypomania. These mood shifts can happen as often as numerous times a week or they may only happen a few times a year.
A manic episode is a period of unusual emotion that causes you to be overly joyful, full of energy, and cause you to be excessively confident. To diagnose a manic episode the mood must be severe enough to be causing difficulty at work, school, family, relationships, or social events. If it requires hospitalization to avoid harm to oneself or anyone else it can also be classified as a manic episode. When someone is having a manic episode it can be recognized by rapid speech (making it hard for any one else to get a word in), and very high self esteem. The person will be very hyperactive and may not get much sleep. He or she may say that they are rich and have lots of money to buy elaborate things, when yet they most likely have little to no money at all. A person whom is having a manic episode may be willing to just give away valuables or go spend all the money that they have due to poor decisions. A manic episode will last for at least one week and can last up to a few months at a time, ending suddenly. A hypomanic episode is a milder episode of mania. It is...

Anxiety disorders, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Addiction or substance abuse, and Physical health problems, such as heart disease, thyroid problems, or obesity, all of these which are commonly found in individuals whom have bipolar disorder. If you have one or more of these conditions then it is necessary to get medical treatment. Also having another condition may interfere with treatment for bipolar disorder.
There 's no guaranteed way to avoid having bipolar disorder. Nonetheless, getting treatment at the first symptom of a mental health disorder can help prevent bipolar disorder or other mental health disorders from worsening.
According to some sources, bipolar disorder can be a gift and a curse depending how you look at it and when it is happening (Smith). With bipolar one experiences highs and lows in behavior, but can learn how to control their behavior with therapy and certain medications. It depends how you look at the disorder and how you treat it. People who have it under control will most likely not be as upset that they have it, rather than someone who cannot control themselves, it all depends on the outlook and the
In his journal, “Bipolar II Disorder: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Management,” author Franco Benazzi (2007) states that, “Hypomania, according to DSM-IV, requires… decreased need for sleep, increased talking, racing thoughts, distractibility… and excessive involvement in risky activities” (p. 727). Hilda Spellman frequently talks too fast and often succumbs to her own racing thoughts. In the Sabrina, t...
Bipolar does not have a specific cause it is a complex disorder with multiple contributing factors one is genetic. Sometimes bipolar tends to run in peoples families. Another factor is biological.
The first category is Bipolar I, which is diagnosed when a person has at least one manic episode or one mixed episode (where mania and depression occur at the same time). On average, four or more episodes are experienced in one year. (Staff, 2012) If left untreated, mania typically lasts seven days to a few months. Untreated depression can last six months to one year. Next is Bipolar II, which is diagnosed when a person has at least one major depressive episode and one hypomanic episode. They will not have had a full blown manic episode, or a mixed one. Then there is cyclothymia or cyclothymic disorder where there is a mood disturbance and shift, but far less severe than that observed in Bipolar Disorder. In order to be diagnosed, a person will have had this dysfunction for at least two years.

Bipolar disorder can result in behavioral issues that lead to interpersonal difficulty, including anger, abrasive communication, distrust and paranoia, and disrupted family, social, and health care relationships. It is a fact that if you live without putting stress on your body and mind you will save some years off of your life. Bipolar Disorder patients goes through a lot of stress each day putting your mind and body through it. With stress comes ageing, weight gain, exhaustion, high blood pressure, ex. A person suffering from bipolar disorder alternates from manic states to those of depression. These emotional states can alternate cyclically or one mood may dominate over the other. It is also possible for the two to be mixed or combined with each other.
Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function.
Mania is feeling on top of the world. Feeling really good about self and happy. Some mood changes are very energetic, talking fast, impatient, irritable, and lack of judgement. Behavior changes can include little sleep, talking a lot, can`t concentrate and get distracted easy, and engage in risky behavior.
A mood disturbance is classified as severe if it causes a marked impairment in social or occupational functioning or to necessitate hospitalization to prevent harm to self or others, or if there are psychotic features. However, this episode is not attributable to the psychological effects of a substance (“Bipolar and Related Disorders, “n.d.). During a manic episode, individuals often do not perceive that they are ill or in need of treatment and vehemently resist efforts to be treated. Individuals may change their dress, makeup, or personal appearance to a more sexually suggestive or flamboyant style. Some perceive a sharper sense of smell, hearing, or vision. Gambling and antisocial behaviors may accompany the manic episode (“Bipolar and Related Disorders, “n.d.).
According to the Center for Clinical Interventions (n.d.), “There are a number of factors that interact with each other that may contribute to the development of this disorder in some people”. The factors can be both environmental and genetic. Although genetic factors are considered the most important for the bipolar disorder development, “episodes that develop after the first one appear to be more heavily influenced by environmental stress, sleep disruption, alcohol and substance abuse, inconsistent drug treatments, and other genetic, biological, or environmental factors” (Milkowitz, 2010, p. 74). Patient M had already suffered two similar episodes of strange behavior and her family history includes mood disorders concerning states of depression...
Bipolar disorder is the condition in which one’s mood switches from periods of extreme highs known as manias to periods of extreme lows known as depression. The name bipolar comes from the root words bi (meaning two) and polar (meaning opposite) (Peacock, 2000). Though often bipolar disorder is developed in a person’s late teens to early adulthood; bipolar disorder’s early symptoms can sometimes be found in young children or may develop later on in life (National Institutes of, 2008). Bipolar disorder has been found to affect both men and women equally. Currently the exact cause of bipolar disorder is not yet known, however it has been found to occur most often in the relatives of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder (National Center for, 2010).
Bipolar Disorder is the tendency of manic episodes to alternate with major depressive episodes, like a roller coaster. Barlow, D., Durand, M., Stewart, S., & Lalumière, M., 2014, p. 222. Their moods and relationships are unstable and they usually have a very poor self image, recurrent feelings of emptiness and fear of abandonment. Psychologically, mania is described as a mood disorder characterized by euphoric states ,extreme physical activity ,excessive talkativeness, distractedness, and sometimes grandiosity. During manic periods a person becomes "high" extremely active , excessively talkative, and easily distracted. During these periods the affected person's self esteem is also often greatly inflated. These people often become aggressive and hostile to others as their self confidence becomes more and more inflated and exaggerated. In extreme cases (like Hamlet's) the manic person may become consistently wild or violent until he or she reaches the point of exhaustion. Manic depressives often function on little or no sleep during their episodes.
