Today most foods that Canadians eat have traces of GMOs, it is found in most products from yogurt to bananas to cereal. In fact, Canada grows four kinds of genetically modified organisms; canola, soy, corn, and sugar beet (Chopra). For the past 15 years, Canada has embraced biotechnology, and this can be beneficial for all (Chopra). This is because it has a higher efficiency/yield, it reduces the use of toxic chemicals, and provides nutrients.
Firstly, biotechnology and GMOs are beneficial for the society. For instance, with the help of biotechnology, farmers can produce a higher yield (Leguee). Furthermore, having GMOs benefits the industry and farmers. With the help of GMOs, the farmers have a higher yield, thus there is more supply and products to be sold. This ultimately leads to the boom and growth of agriculture industry (EatRightOntario n.p.). The agriculture industry will also become sustainable, this helps benefit the economy and society, as it helps lower food prices. GMOs are organisms that consist of altered genes, which can result in a beneficial mutation, these mutations can benefit people (Forge). Many may think that a mutation might be negative, but this is not the case always. A mutation with biotechnology and GMOs may provide more nutrients than to its counterpart (MacKendrick). For example, on May 16, 2016, the Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection clarified AquaAdvantage Salmon, created by AquaBounty Technologies Inc., to be safe. It also was stated to provide equal amount of nutrients as other salmon (MacKendrick). The only difference is that the modified salmon contains a growth hormone from Chinook salmon (Philpott).
