At the age of 14, I decided I was going to be a doctor. This decision was based not only on my fascination with science, specifically the human body, but also on the outdated and ineffective health care system in my home county, Nigeria. The event that incited my decision was the death of my twin siblings shortly after their birth, due to the incompetence of the doctors. It was a very hard time for my family which made me realize the urgent need for good doctors in Nigeria. Hence, I took it upon myself to be a contribution to an improved health care system.

MD-PhD programs provide training in both medicine and research with the purpose of becoming a research physician or physician-scientist. I intend on obtaining the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, particularly tissue engineering or cancer research, because it is the source of the most promising innovations in the field of medicine. It integrates engineering principles and mechanics in solving several medical issues which appears to be one of the most effective ways, being that the world is becoming more technologically inclined. Although most MD-PhD programs in the U.S last between 7-8 years, the length of my program will be determined by the curriculum of the institution that I will attend. I plan to apply to the MD-Ph.D. program during the month of my graduation, which is May 2018. Due to the one-year application process, I would have a gap year, during which I will work in a research institution to improve my research skills. After I obtain my MD-PhD, I intend on continuing to clinical residency, as I would be able to partake in research while interacting with patients.
