Harriet Tubman, known as the best conductor in the Underground Railroad, was born a slave in Maryland Dorchester County around 1820. Harriet Tubman was born as Araminta Ross, but then later changed her name to Harriet; after her mother (Landau; 66). Like most of the slave children, Harriet Tubman started working at a very young age and was often beaten because she was a so called “devious” child. She stopped her devious ways when she found out that if her ways were to continue then she would be sold to another plantation. She was too young to manage on her and she was well aware that once sold she would never be able to see her family again. She would be forced to do whatever her new masters told her to do and if she did not behave with them too, then she would most likely be killed. A few years later, in her early teens, Harriet was stricken by a two-pound weight injuring her on the side of her head. Her overseer had picked it up trying to throw it at a runaway slave and accidently stuck Harriet instead. She never fully recovered, and was in a coma for quite some time (Landau; 66). Her mother nursed her every day and prayed every second she could for Harriet to recover from the incident. After she had awoken from the coma, Harriet said she would get “visions" from time to time. With those visions she could oddly tell that something wrong was going to happen. She used these visions to her full advantage too. Before being sold she would often fake that she fainted to save herself. She had to go to an extreme measure when a plantation owner went to examine her so he could make an offer but quickly changed his mind when he found her talking to God. She asked God what she could do to avoid being sold and he told her “Talk to me out... ... middle of paper ... ... for money to be able to make the trip. But, she was rejected by them because they did not have the amount. She then said she was going to sit in a chair outside of their office because she knew God is never wrong and if he told her that she would get her to money as long as she went to their office. As she left the room to sit down in a chair outside their office she was began to feel tired and fell asleep. When she awoke she found a pile of money on her lap. There was a lady in the room that had seen it all, and told Harriet that there had been a few rich folk who had come in, not knowing what had drawn them there, and heard her story. After they heard why Harriet was there they would take out their wallets and leave a big amount of cash on her lap. She proceeded to go south in search of her parents. After finding her parents she successfully made it to the North.
