Orcs and Goblins wage war against the other inhabitants of middle earth in an attempt to take the precious gold the dwarves possess. Humans, Elves, and Dwarves combat the evil of the Orcs resulting in many casualties as well as mass destruction of human fortresses. The races of middle earth clash in an epic “battle of the five armies” similar to the battle of Armageddon mentioned in Revelation.(Brown 33) The Orcs gain the upper hand only to be defeated by unexpected air attack help from the Eagles of Goren. However, Tolkien applies even more effort into his dynamic characters. The protagonist Bilbo Baggins is the central focus throughout the entire journey.Bilbo resides in a hole in the Shire a peaceful province full of small hobbits such as himself. Knowing nothing of the outside world, Bilbo follows Gandalf into Middle-Earth to embark on an important journey. Biblo evolves throughout the novel as he encounters many dangerous situations that challenge him mentally and physically. Bilbo unknowingly becomes the unexpected hero of the novel as he helps bring peace to Middle-Earth. Even after his heroic adventure Bilbo returns home to live in his peaceful Shire once more. (Olsen 34) Biblo represents a perfect image of man before an encounter with the Spirit of God. Just as Bilbo stays safe in his home, man remains in the comfort of sin.(Brown 17) Bilbo is lead by Gandalf into a world of danger and chaos not for his benefit, but for the greater purpose of saving Middle-Earth. Tolkien's relationship between his fictional world and the physical state of the human race adds a powerful and unique aspect to his literature . His influence in modern literature is great, yet small in comparison to those touched by his Christian influence. C.S. Lewis, the author of a similar trilogy of mythological Christian related literature, was directly taught and influenced by Tolkien while in college.
