Tupac Shakur “Stay far from timid, only make moves when your heart’s in it, and live the phrase sky’s the limit.” It’s lyrics like these where Biggie Smalls could grab his listeners attention and have them correlate their average lifestyle to his prosperous one. Some could say he influenced a new generation of hip-hop and rap, but he didn’t do it alone. Biggie Smalls name and music represented the whole East Coast side of the country at the time. During the late 1990’s Biggie had to share his famed spotlight with his West Coast rival, Tupac Shakur. Tupac’s mother, Alice, a single mother of two, was struggling finically and moved her family to Baltimore years later. This was where Tupac enrolled in Baltimore’s School For the Arts and grew found of acting. Alice realized the neighborhood in Baltimore she was raising her children in was crime ridden and moved her family to California. Tupac, a high school dropout, would then sell drugs on the same street his mother once bought her supply from. Before his fame began in the music industry, Tupac starred in a famous film called Juice. The movie would bring over 5 million dollars in revenue. With an obsession for poetry, Tupac then dove into his music career. His music would speak of real-life struggles, but would provoke lots of violence in his songs. Tupac would later sign with Los Angeles Deathrow Records, a record label that claimed to embody the West Coast. The signing of this record company would start fueling the fire with his rival, also known as Notorious B.I.G. Tupac was shot by two unknown gunmen in November of 1994. Tupac believed Biggie planned the shooting towards him and aimed the violence toward him directly. Some say this escalated the rival between the two rappers. Tupac later died in 1996 and was shot by another unknown shooter in Las Vegas. Biggie’s father left him and his mother behind when Christopher was only two years old. Like Tupac’s childhood, Biggie’s mother, Voletta, struggled with funds and worked two jobs to pay for Christopher’s private education. To help his mother with finances, Biggie transferred to a public school. Parallel to Tupac, Biggie dropped out of high school and began distributing drugs in his neighborhood. Like Tupac, Biggie Smalls excelled in English while he was in school and that would contribute to his rapping legacy later on. While Tupac was starting his acting career, Biggie began writing music. His music would reach out to his fans and he rapped words of justness. Biggie signed with Bad Boy Records, a record label that claimed to represent the East Coast and rival to Deathrow Records. Biggie and Tupac’s friendship before the dispute included drinking, eating, and smoking together. The two record labels, Bad Boy and Deathrow Records, had bad blood before Tupac and Biggie arrived. Provoking the shooting before Tupac’s death, Biggie released a song named “Who Shot Ya”. The two rappers began composing “diss” tracks towards one another, heightening the quarrel. Six months after Tupac Shakur’s death, Biggie was shot and killed by an unknown killer. His place of death was in Los Angeles, California.
