Beyond My Expectations: ‘Beyond The Lights’

Another sizzling romance hits our movie screens titled “Beyond the Lights” with the same producer as the hit “Love & Basketball” that stole all our hearts 14 years ago. Will it be a flop or hit? It definitely showed the light! Actors, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Noni and Nate Parker as Kaz in Beyond the Lights creates the same on-screen chemistry that made us fall in love with the characters, Monica and Quincy, on “Love & Basketball”.

Noni and her mom from London have been trying to make it to stardom since Noni was a little girl. The movie begins with Noni as a little girl in a talent show winning the crowd over with her voice as she sings the emotional song Blackbird. Her mom tells her to cover it up because they have come too far and can’t afford to lose it all because of Noni’s inability to deal with life.

As expected, Kaz and Noni eventually become involved and Kaz begins to notice how damaging the entertainment industry can be. Noni’s mother thinks that their relationship is toxic because they are two different people who have different goals. Her mother is more concerned with Noni’s career than well being of her daughter. Superstar Noni is dating the cop who saved her from falling off the hotel balcony. It’s not the attention she needs. It’s not the type of attention Kaz needs in order to receive the promotion on the police force and his dad who is counting on him.

A performance goes awry and Noni eventually realizes she needs to get away and find herself with the guy who truly sees her. Noni strips away her hair extensions and make-up and becomes another person. The audience is finally able to connect with the natural Noni who can now pass for the girl next door. Their getaway is crashed by the paparazzi. Noni must choose between her time with Kaz or return to
