A livable world is defined from the society you participate in everyday life. We as people make laws and regulations for situations that may or may not happen. This is because humans are imperfect and full of flaws. Laws and regulations are the guidelines for properly living in a society that dictates to the mass instead of hearing individual concern. Then again what is it meant to be “imperfect”? Who designates the description behind being perfect? This is what I believe is “the norm” or normal way of life of a society. In the essay by Judith Butler, Besides Oneself: On the Limits of Sexual Autonomy, she describes the social norms of society slowly changing and designing new social norms of society by the awareness of Gays, Lesbians, and Transgender preference people. She is also describing the struggles of everyday life for gays, lesbians, and transgender people. Butler states a question that makes a good point for this way of thought, “what makes for a livable world?”(Page 240). This question is asked to understand what a livable life is first. A livable life is life that is accepted by society. If society does not accept certain individuals because of the choices they choose to make or the way they are brought up, then society chooses to stay ignorant and uneducated on these types of situations. Individuals who are not accepted by society receive less treatment than that of some who is accepted by society. This does not only extend to gays, lesbians, and transgender, but extends to people who are less fortunate than others. People judge people. This is human life. A human life is a human life. We are all made the same way and we all of the ability to make choices, we have an ability to learn, and to adjust to uncomfortable situations in order to maintain a mindset without prejudice. Society is as a whole is slowly learning this aspect of acceptance of gays, lesbians, and transgendered people. Introduction On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center buildings one and two were attacked. However, who we were attacked by and even if we were attacked is a hard decision to make. There have been many different claims about how everything on that fateful day happened. There are facts that we know are true, though; Flight 11 flew into the North Tower at eight forty- six in the morning.
The morning of September 11, 2001 began with the hijacking of four planes from Boston’s Logan airport. The goal of the fateful event was to cripple the United States economy by destroying what was considered to be the center of its power, Wall Street, the Pentagon and the White House (Amadeo). The terrorists successfully hit one of their targets, both towers of the American Trade Center, by 9 AM the morning of September 11th. The Pentagon in Washington D.C. was the next target with American Airlines Flight 77 crashing into it around 9:30 AM. The last plane, Flight 93, which was headed for targets in Washington, either the White House or the Capitol Building, crashed into western Pennsylvania after the passengers attacked the terrorists on board (Amadeo). The death total was staggering, 2975 people died in the attacks on September 11, 2001. This number surpassed the number of people who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 1941
Stereotypes have become a socially accepted phenomena in today’s society. So socially acceptable, in fact, they have made it onto advertising billboards and into our daily language. We do not think twice as they pass our tongues, and we do tilt our heads in concern or questioning as they pass into our ears. In Judith Butler’s essay “Besides Oneself: On the Limits of Sexual Autonomy”, stereotypes are exposed and explored. Especially stereotypes pertaining to sexual orientation. Butler explains how stereotypes are unacceptable. She does this in a way which allows her to concurrently explore what it means to be human, and also what humans do or need to make Earth a livable place for ourselves. An abundance of transgenders are finally identifying as their true gender in our generation. In fact, in the United States alone, there are 700,000 transgenders (Gates 2011). However, our generation isn’t welcoming these true identities, but shaming them. Though, it is incredible that slowly the idea of transgenders is becoming more acceptable, the amount of hate and harassment these human beings receive is unacceptable. According to C. Wright Mills’ “The Promise”, he feels that an individual’s life and how they act is based on the society and what is happening around them at that time. Mills states in his essay that the sociological imagination helps us understand each individual’s background, lifestyles, and habits and/or traditions. It also allows us to understand the influence society may have on a person and how “historical” events led to it. Based on what he wrote, to understand this “imagination” we must be able to connect a person’s public or personal issues with the events happening within society during that time. According to this a person may act differently depending on their religious beliefs, whether or not they live within the city or the suburbs, etc. For example Mills argues that if a person’s “values” are not threatened then they would be in a state of “well-being” but, if their values were threatened then they would go into some sort of “crisis”. If Mills means “values” as in a person’s “standards of behavior” then this is happening today in our society with the LGBT equal rights movement. Many people feel that being homosexual is not a “standard behavior” and that it is perhaps a sickness. They feel that men should be with women therefor many have gone into a “crisis” and have begun belittling the gay community or bullying them due to the fact that they feel that this is not how an individual should be. I want you to become aware of what we have done and take action to stop people to be happy, to respect their way of thinking, acting, and living. My purpose in writing this paper is to present my points of view on how society has changed as the years go by. Also how homosexuals have fought for many years and all the different struggles they have managed to get the rights they deserve and one day had which were then taken away because they became themselves and also because of the ignorance of some people.
Dr. Seuss once said, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind do not matter and those who matter do not mind.” Dr. Seuss meant that one should be his or herself regardless of others’ opinions. The Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender community (LGBT) is treated similarly to the African American community during the mid 1800s. They are both treated and viewed differently than everyone else. Luckily, there are laws to prevent the discrimination. However, discrimination in the United States has never gone away and will always be problematic.
In conclusion, people should focus on their own life instead of others. We need to stop judging and discriminating each other’s lives. However, as humans they cannot make society exultant if either they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or straight society will still judge that person, because they are different. I will be exploring some of the readings discussed in class. the first one brings into the topic of homosexuality and the implication it can come with. For how can you get any more into autonomy than when talking about your sexuality? Focusing on Murphy see you we can agree and say that homosexuality should be morally permissible. It 's all about personal freedom, we should not get to decide who the other person is attracted to, better yet we should not discriminate others for their choices. It 's well known that members of the LGBT+ community face hardship by bullying or estrangement. But they also have an equality up until a few months ago they cannot have the option of marriage. In today's society, there exists a mixture of issues which tend to raise arguments with people all over. There are a handful of topics that always seem to escalate these differences between people to the point where one who earnestly participates in discussion, debate and argument can direct their anger towards their feelings on the person themselves. Some examples of such delicate subjects are the death penalty, abortion, and euthanasia. An issue that has in recent years, begun to increase arguments, is the acceptability of homosexuality in society. Until recently, homosexuality was considered strictly taboo. If an individual was homosexual, it was considered a secret to be kept from all family, friends, and society. However, it seem that society has begun to accept this lifestyle by allowing same sex couples. The idea of coming out of the 'closet' has moved to the head of homosexual individuals when it used to be the exception. Homosexuality is nothing to be ashamed of and we should all come to realize this.
Injustice is prevalent in today’s society and it does not do any good for society. A marginalized group that is still being discriminated against and not being accepted widely is the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, which is also known as the LGBT community. Many LGBT people have experienced some form of harassment or discrimination in the workforce. Society’s growth would not be hindered if it were not for social prejudice.
The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community has been disapproved by many since it first came about in the 1950s. Since then, the societal attitude towards homosexuality and LGBT culture has changed greatly, as much of the world has become more accepting of same-sex sexuality as it has become more common. Studies have also shown that the younger generation are more tolerant towards LGBT views. The LGBT community consists of many beliefs and values that make the community different and intriguing.
