Bergisel Ski-Jump
The wondrous architect Zaha Hadid was born on October 31, 1950 in Baghdad, Iraq. Zaha went to Great Britain for higher education and studied under Elia Zenghelis and Rem Koolhaas. After her studies she started working with her previous instructors, Zenghelis and Koolhaas at the office for Metropolitan Architecture, becoming a partner in 1977. In 1980, Zaha Hadid established her own London-based practice and she gave her company the name “Zaha Hadid Architects”. Bergisel Ski Jump (2002) is designed by Zaha Hadid on a mountain named Bergisel that is located in Innsbruck, the capital of the federal state of Tyrol in western Austria. The project isn’t usual because it isn’t just a ski jump. It is a hybrid of a collection of public spaces including a dining area, a public viewing terrace, and a highly specialized sports facility. Commonly, a ski jump is a comparatively single-dimensional technological building, which serves a single purpose. But in Austria, the designers desired a new form to convey the blended use.
For winter sport competitions like Olympic ski jumping, Innsbruck has a long tradition as being the venue. The Mountain Bergisel, with its height and viewpoint of the town, was the locale of the great ski competitions throughout the Winter Olympics of 1964 and 1976. Innsbruck faced a problem in 1990 when its original 1960’s built facility no longer followed international regulations. For Innsbruck to remain at the top of the international competition venue, the site had to be reengineered as modern athletes were jumping much farther than they were in the 1960’s. Therefore it was decided by the event organizers to start the major makeover of the Olympic domain. Horst Passer was the engineer who first ...

For allowance of this tower to be built the following changes will be made to place the skyscraper in Central Park. Most importantly the ski jump will be removed. There is no possible way to make the jump from that height be safe for anyone at all. Secondly, since there is only one fire protected staircase in the tower with two high speed elevators, renovation will be done to adapt another fire protected stairway. Giving the building a new total of two (2) fire protected stairways and two (2) high speed elevators that will take the visitors to a soaring 2,847 feet up. Lastly, the hours of operation will be extended from 9:00AM to 9:00PM to ensure all visitors an ample amount of time to view the melting pot of the world in both day and night views.

Cross-country skiing is as much of a competitive sport, as it is a back country one. Cross-country skiing is enjoyed by people of all ages, and can be relatively inexpensive. There is no need for lift tickets and with a little maintenance equipment can last for decades. As a result of its broad audience, many people don't realize that physics plays a large role in cross-country skiing. This web page was designed to briefly describe some of the concepts behind the physics of skiing, and give a basic understanding of both the sport and the science.
Throughout time, the progression and evolution of snowboarding has increased greatly. It has gone from non existence in the late 1970’s, to one of the most watched action sports in a matter of thirty-five years. The upward takeoff and popularity of snowboarding relies on two people, Jake Burton and Shaun White. Jake Burton back in 1977 had the vision for what snowboarding would be, but Shaun White had what it took to manifest that vision. Evidence has shown that time brings change in sports, history has repeated itself with snowboarding, this history reflects the time & changes that has occurred in America.

The O & P field has had a connection with adaptive snow sports from its beginning. The “Grandfather of handicapped (adaptive) skiing” as he is referred to by the Skiing Hall of Fame is none other than Paul E. Leimkuehler, CPO. He had such an impact on the sport that in1981 was inducted into the Skiing Hall of Fame.
If anyone has ever heard about or watched skiing it is probably alpine skiing. Alpine skiing is the most traditional and popular type of skiing. Some of the necessary pieces of equipment needed for skiing are, helmet, gloves, ski pants and jacket, goggles, ski poles, ski boots and bindings, and last but not least skis. There are ten alpine skiing events in the olympics they vary from Downhill and Slalom, to Moguls and Slopestyle. Alpine skiing has been around since about 600 BC in modern day China. Earlier skiers used one big pole or spear not two like modern day skiers. Until the mid 19th century skiing was only used for transportation, but since then it is mainly used as a recreational sport.

I had a chance to visit this building and as I stood under the edge of the building looking upward I was amazed by the beauty and precision, and stunned by the size and splendor. Inside I could not get past the entrance and a guard told me I wasn’t allowed to take pictures. The interior with its light colored marble walls and double height ceiling is breathtaking, I stood there and I felt a tremble run through my body. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite buildings in New York.
Competition Between Snowboarding and Skiing Snowboarding and Skiing are common and different in the subjects of culture, technique, and equipment. There are similarities on and off the mountain as well as major differences. Snowboarding was influenced in the beginning by skiing and it is now growing rapidly. Skiing has been taking part in the boarding culture to regain some ground hey lost to the boarding craze. This culture will be shown through a comparison in a “Battle of the Mountain.”
Guangzhou Opera House is a recently completed building by Zaha Hadid Architects. The project is located in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, completed in 2010. The building’s extreme geometry and the spectacular interior have brought about international awareness and appreciations on its design. Followings are two articles that examine and critique the building. One is “L'auditorium asimmetrico (Asymmetrical Auditorium)”from the architecture journal “Abitare”. The other article is “Crazy Angles, Soaring Steel” by Thomas Lane from the architecture Journal “Building”.
One World Trade Center (WTC) is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere measuring up at 1776 feet tall. The built output sets new standards of design, construction, and prestige. Its beauty in New York City’s magical skyline makes it an icon. It is the most recognised and desirable office address in the world. In this essay I plan to argue that the social, political and economic status of society has affected the built output of this building considerably, for the good. Making the building one of the best skyscrapers in the world.

Thin air encompasses me as I commence the final day of skiing at Vail, Colorado. Seven days of skiing elapse rather painlessly; I fall occasionally but an evening in the Jacuzzi soothes my minor aches. Closing time approaches on the final day of our trip as I prepare myself for the final run of the vacation. Fresh off the ski lift, I coast toward the junction of trails on the unoccupied expert face of the mountain. After a moment of thought, I confidently select a narrow trail so steep that only the entrance can be seen from my viewpoint.
Challenge plays an essential role in defining a sport; it provides the individual with the feeling of achievement in success. Skiing poses challenge even in its simplest foundations. Skiing on a poor quality hill, with icy snow and poor upkeep can sometimes create more challenge than a well-groomed slope. Skiing in the backcountry away from lifts and other people in freshly fallen snow provides an opportunity for the best of skiers to test t...
