Beowulf's Dictatorship

In our modern society a dictatorship is a strongly disapproved system of government. There was no democracy or formal relationship between the wishes of the citizens and the actions of those in power. This led to the difference in powers that many chose to either take advantage of, or amend problematic dilemmas and uplift the quality of life to those who they were in control of. A candidate for one of the greatest rulers in the 16th century, is the hero from the land of the Geats, Beowulf. Due to the various accolades he has earned throughout his lifetime, he was chosen as a recipient of the kingdom to boost his reputation by awarding him a granted spot at the throne. Garmonsway once wrote, "those in authority might have seen pictured [therein] their obligations and responsibilities, and. . . could have gleaned political wisdom . . . and learned some useful lessons about current moral sanctions governing behaviour in general, and heroic conduct in particular"(Pg. 139) This quote gains credible insight to King Beowulf’s vast history of heroism and his true intentions of traveling to the land of the Geats. Through centuries of fighting and amending life-ending situations for a numerous amounts of people, Beowulf has obtained an extensive amount of knowledge. The power Lear gives Goneril and Reagan is what provokes them to become treacherous and deceitful. Absolute power corrupts the daughters as once they have total control and the women become filled with so much greed that they will do anything to keep the power and or gain more. Shakespeare states, “Down from the waist they are centaurs, Though women all above. But to the girdle the gods inherit, Beneath is all the fiend’s”[Act IV, scene 6, II. 126-29] The quote displayed shows the moment King Lear, found in madness an answer to which brought him there. Realizing that his two daughters that took the throne did in fact not love him at all but only wanted the accolades in which he possessed. When Lear asked for a place to stay they were not quick to respond, they were ready to envelope themselves in their new found power. This power blinds them except for nothing but the quest of total control. Division of powers brought upon by King Lear does in fact initiate a civil war between the kingdom that Cordelia controls and the combined armies of Albany and Edmund. Thematically the battle is the dominant reaction to the influence of King Lear's poor decisions at the induction of the play.
