Who would have thought that writing about yourself could actually have an effect on others? This is actually the case with many autobiographies in history. Take Benjamin Franklin’s The Autobiography for example; in this piece, Franklin describes his own attempt at self improvement. He lists several virtues he was going to attempt to obtain, but he wasn’t successful in becoming the perfect man he had set out to be. However, this work of literature would prove to be very effectual. Benjamin Franklin’s The Autobiography had an effect on both himself and society especially through the ideas of industry, justice, and order. First of all, Franklin had a goal of attaining the virtue of “industry” as he calls it. He tried to attain a sense of order in his life, but he soon found out that between his lack of desire to be completely orderly and the unpredictability of the world, it was much harder than he had presumed. Business meetings couldn’t have exact times and Ben had no need to have specific location for everything due to his good memory, so he ended up teaching himself that sometimes he just had to, “…content myself with a faulty character in that respect….” (p.145) This could have been the first step in Ben’s realization that perfection is nearly impossible. However, this idea of order has not disappeared; many people, especially in American society heavily rely on a certain schedule for all of life.
