Today’s college students are paying tens of thousands of dollars for a degree in hopes of making lots of money. However, the cost of that degree has become more expensive than ever. Students are graduating from college not only with a degree, but also with debt. In order to decrease the amount of student debt and give more opportunities to students, countries around the world are adopting a “tuition free” approach to college and university education. The benefits of tuition free higher education include no student debt, a decrease in national debt, more opportunities for low income students, and an increase in to the college education population. College tuition is thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars per semester and although there are plenty of scholarships and grants for many students, not all students can afford to attend college, even though they would greatly benefit themselves and society with a college degree. Tuition free higher education would allow low income students the ability to obtain a degree where they otherwise would not be able to today because of the high price of tuition. According to Wang Huamin, an associate professor in the college of education at Southwest University, Chongqing, China, she believes that higher education should be free so that more people would have the opportunity to gain a higher education as well as promote equality. Today, America is striving to make the separation between the upper and lower class closer together and tuition free higher education would give those in the lower class the ability to work up to the upper class by receiving a college or university degree.
