Telecommuting can be defined as a way of working adopted by a full-time, part- time or self-employed worker working from a location away from the office (or in some cases the head office), at any time, for any period of time, using various tools and technologies to do so. There is no universal definition, but basically, it is about being location and time independent. Gone are the days where it was defined simply as ‘working from home’, although home is the place where much telecommuting happens. There are many terms that can be used to describe the concept, for example, teleworking, hoteling, e-working, telecommuting, and mobile working, amongst others. Some example for telecommuting • ADSL Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL, Dial-up ... ) • Microsoft SharePoint. • Social Networking Social Networking (facebook, QQ, weibo, ZingMe ..) • Video Conference A Video Conference ( Wechat, Skype, Bing Chat ...) • Voice over IP Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP, Viber, Heyfire, Zalo ...) • Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G ... Today many firms are interested in telecommuting due to the many benefits that the initiative brings about. These benefits pertain to the firm, employee and wider social and environmental arenas, as will be seen in this section. First benefit is human resource. Telecommuting, workers stand to be more productive and motivated, and resources will be optimally used. Hence, the firm’s service will improve. Overtime costs and turnover will also be reduced. People will probably stay longer with an employer who offers flexible working arrangements. This would result in brand loyalty because long serving staff will be able to grow long-term relationships with customers. Telecommuting may also not be well looked upon during bad economic times when firms want all their staff in and working hard. If fact, remote workers may feel that they ought to come in during these times, in the name of self-preservation. This may defeat one of the purposes of the initiative which is to have a leaner and agile workforce. In my opinion, i thing i can be a telecomuter. I can use my knowedge to help other partner solve thier problem via telecommuting. As seen, the barriers and challenges to Remote Working are not so much technological but more about sentiments, culture and trust. All the above problems may result in firms not adopting Telecommuting and not adapting the way they work. In the long run, they may lose out to the delectable benefits of Telecommuting .
