Oh, Put a Sock On It! Why wear socks? After all, socks are not exactly the most visible clothing item. Thick socks, thin socks, cotton socks, wool socks, long socks, short socks, fun socks, medical socks, you name it, and there is a sock for it. They also make great gifts, especially for Christmas and birthdays. There are many benefits associated with wearing socks, and it largely depends on the type of material the sock is made of. Whether it be cotton, nylon, silk, or wool, choosing the right socks will help reap some amazing feet benefits. As shoes are worn, whether with or without socks, the insoles get worn out and this makes the shoes uncomfortable at times. Worn out insoles can be bad for your feet and should be avoided. While replacing the insoles is a great idea, wearing good, quality socks will also provide extra and much-needed padding for the feet. It also helps prevent the feet from sliding in the shoe and protect it from friction and other injuries. Wearing socks to keep the feet warm at night has been proven to actually make a difference in sleep patterns. According to Sleep.org, “Heating cold feet causes vasodilation—dilation of the blood vessels—which may tell the brain that it is bedtime. After the blood vessels open in the hands and feet, heat is redistributed throughout the body to prepare for sleep.” In other words, keeping the feet warm in bed helps have less restless nights. According to a study published in Nature the International Weekly Journal of Science, going to bed with socks on actually helps to fall asleep fifteen minutes faster than usual (36-37).
