Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, throughout many cultures to help with the balance of physical and mental well-being. Throughout the years yoga has also been incorporated with many healings, whether with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or many other things that cause us mental and physical pain. However, recently yoga has been intertwined with cancer patients who have just been diagnosed, are currently going through the treatments, and for the miraculous people who have survived this destructive disease. Recently nine studies were done with cancer patients to show improvements on sleep quality, mood, stress, cancer-related distress, cancer related symptoms, and the patients over-all quality of life. DiStasio states in her article that yoga has the root meaning of bind and join. She also states that yoga is used as a “union of mind, body, and spirit.” She explains that yoga could possibly be used as a complementary therapy for cancer patients, which will help the patients find their awareness of breath, they can seek relaxation during yoga meetings while also getting light exercise into their schedules and they are surrounded by people who can socially support them while understanding what they are going through. In another study conducted by Laurien M. Buffart and her affiliations, thirteen Randomized Controlled Trials were done and were focused on patients with lymphomas and breast cancer. Patients were put in yoga sessions, taught by experienced yoga instructors that involved physical poses, breathing techniques, and meditation. Patients were in sessions for thirty minutes before chemotherapy once every ten days. The results of their study showed that yoga does have beneficial effects on patient’s physical and psychosocial symptoms. I believe this study truly showed that we underestimate the psyche of patients that are being brought to the near brink of death just to live, and that something as calming and nurturing as practicing yoga can have small and large effects on these patients. Their study found changes in the patient’s stress, anxiety, depression and fatigue levels. These areas improved from a range of 22 to 89 …show more content…
Lisa Holrby has made a written guide for people living with this terrible disease and has made it easy for them to help themselves if they desire. She has a book titled “Healing Yoga for people living with cancer.” Ellen Saltonstall says that she has instructions that are clear and complete but simple enough for people who have never even thought of yoga before. Saltonstall also states that Holrby “infuses every page with positive affirmations that are genuine and uplifting without being saccharine.” It is also noted that Holrby has worked with cancer patients before and knows them on a deeper level so she knows what is going to benefit them

There is a significant need for psychosocial oncology in modern day cancer treatment. Cancer is an enemy that no patient should have to face alone. Cancer treatment should not only be focused on the disease but also the individual. Humans are complex organisms that need to have relationships each other. Psychological oncology helps the cancer patient manage their emotions so that they do not become depressed and sever the social ties that helps them to remember that life is worth fighting for.

It has been studied and suggested that regular practice of Yoga increases the brain gamma-Aminobutyric acid levels which helps in regulating the excitability of the nervous system and muscle tone as well. This helps in reducing anxiety and improving mood functions, letting people lead much more emotionally balanced lives. Apart from the abovementioned advantages, yoga also helps in keeping cardiovascular diseases in check. The three principles of yoga: asana (exercise), pranayama (breathing), and drishti (meditation) help in monitoring heart activities and keeping it functioning healthily. It does so by reducing blood pressure, speeding up recovery related to heart failures or cardiac arrests, and lower other cardiovascular risk factors that some people might have genetically imbibed in them. Similarly, it helps people with chronic back aches. Regular practice of yoga can bring relief over a period of time, than medications alone. Pain medications for back ache or spine-related spasms generally have dangerous side effects such as gastric problems, nausea, and the relief they provide last for a very short period of time. Yoga on the other hand gives back pain sufferers a much necessary relief through stretching exercises and also by meditating which plays a major role in alleviating any kind of
Nestled deep in the mountains of ancient India, yoga was born some five-thousand years ago as more than a mere physical practice, but rather as a sacred way of life with deep spiritual significance to its practitioners. It was the old Hindu tradition for a guru, who had studied the art, to dedicate his life to imparting onto his students the wisdom and teachings he had mastered in order to help each disciple achieve the ultimate goal of yoga: union with the divine, also known as enlightenment. However, once yoga was introduced into Western Society, a movement occurred beginning in the early 1800s’, which took yoga’s deeply embedded philosophical roots and deemed them unessential, picking and prodding the meaning of yoga apart until it no longer

There are various models and theories such as health belief model that are used to explain ones belief on risks and associated risks of a chronic illness and then there are theories such as Crisis theory when dealing with shock when diagnosed with a chronic illness and gate control theory when looking at pain and the psychological issues around dealing with pain. In the United States, things such as yoga and meditation are being prescribed by doctors more often. We are not actually stuck in this carousel of suffering. We already know what the solution is, but, our egos are too strong to permit us to act on it.
