Benefits of Eating Organically A woman enters the grocery to do her weekly shopping. Her name is Alice and she lives with her husband and 2 children. She turns to the produce section and is checking the prices on fruit. Upon arriving at the store, she picks up one apple that is $1.39 a pound and then another apple that is $2.39. There were no differences between the apples. They were both red, medium sized and shinny. So she was thinking about why one was a dollar more than the other, she looked at one of the labels and it said 100% organic. There were no noticeable differences between them so Alice put down the organic apple and bought the non-organic ones. Generally, organic items cost between 10% and 40% more than conventional food items. A result of the increase in food cost, yields a smaller amount of food produced at the farm. The higher cost are effective by multiple factors. Some factors include increase in costs of organic animal feed, lower productivity and an increase in labor (Forman & Sliverstein). The higher costs are a result of higher standards and regulations that are required. The top twelve foods that Alice should consider buying organically are apples, strawberries, grapes, celery, peaches, spinach, sweet bell peppers, nectarines, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, snap peas and potatoes. All of the foods previously listed have high level of pesticides. Hot peppers and blueberries should also be bought organically because they contain a highly toxic insecticides called organophosphate (Weil, 2014). These foods cost more but the conventional products contain higher levels of toxic chemicals. Buying the foods at a higher costs is a better alternative that ingesting dangerous chemicals.
