A major component in effective leadership is the implementation of appropriate communication strategies. In the case study, Williams concludes that he must change the way he communicates to improve employee satisfaction. In order to become an effective leader, Williams must apply and practice three important communication strategies at his public relations firm. First, he must expand outside of his comfort zone and begin having regularly scheduled meetings to communicate new agenda and/or problems that occur. Next, he must begin to craft his communications with the business to contain why an action is being taken as well as what that action will be. Weekly, biweekly, or even monthly scheduled team meetings provide many benefits to both managers and employees. For example, regularly scheduled meetings produce higher productivity due to fewer interruptions between meetings (Theisen, n.d.). They also allow risks and concerns to be raised to both the team and the managers. In Ben Williams’ case, he sees a pattern occur when the staff are not all on the same page when it comes to projects. Perhaps this is because Williams doesn’t believe in meetings being effective and only communicates to the staff when a change is needed. By introducing regularly scheduled meetings, William can better communicate what is currently going on in the firm as well as any changes that are taking place. He has decided to make some changes in the way that communication occurs in the office in order to improve employee satisfaction with company leadership. After an analysis of his current communication practices, it is clear that he could implement three important changes to improve results. First, he must begin having regularly scheduled meetings. Next, he must package his communications with the business to include why an action is being taken as well as what that action will be. Thirdly, Williams must adopt more effective avenues of communication, such as electronic mail, to effectively lead his staff.
