A prophet? A magician? God? Many people become confused when the topic of Nostradamus pops up. Nostradamus was a French seer in the 16th century. A seer is a person who is supposed to be able to, through supernatural insight, see what the future holds. Among a seer, Nostradamus was an astrologer, philosopher, physician and alchemist. Nostradamus’ predictions are hundreds of years old but still find a way to be relevant in today’s society. “...he is said to have predicted the birth of Napoleon, The rise of Nazi Germany, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the terrorist attacks New York’s World Trade Center”(“Nostradamus (1503-1566)”). People’s opinion on how real his prophecies were is all across the board. Some people are true believers while others are skeptics. “Skeptics of Nostradamus state that his reputation as a prophet is largely manufactured by modern-day supporters who shoehorn his words into events that have either already occurred or are so imminent as to be inevitable, a process known as "retroactive clairvoyance". No Nostradamus quatrain has been interpreted before a specific event occurs, beyond a very general level (e.g., a fire will occur, a war will start) (Nostradamus, 1). Whether you believe his predictions are true or misconceptions, its undeniable the impact Nostradamus has had on the world.
Nostradamus, born Michel de Nostradame, was born just one year after his family converted from Judaism to Christianity due to the religion persecution on the ascension of Louis The XII in 1502. Born to Reyniere de Saint- Remy and Jaume de Nostradame in 1503, Nostradamus’ family was full on scholars and doctors. Public education lacked range so he grandfather taught him. “DOCTOR DE RÉMY, Michel's mate...

...t to the accusations brought under the new Martin Guerre. Jean de Coras was proven to have had Protestant ties, and was eventually killed for them. (100) However, he was also a very learned, educated, and passionate man with an upstanding career in law and, after the case of Martin Guerre, the literary world. The idea that someone of so high a rank embraced the new religion shows that its influence at the time cannot be ignored.
Perhaps the most misunderstood, least recognized, and largely undervalued of all the great reformers of the sixteenth century is Michael Sattler, the Anabaptist. The little that is actually known about Michael Sattler is often times assumed or misinterpreted. However, the definite information available regarding this “radical” suggest that his brief yet significant role as a Reformation leader was truly invaluable for the unification and survival of the Anabaptist movement and its teachings. In addition, the radical ideas of Sattler and other Anabaptists have helped shape Western culture as we know it today. The contributions of Sattler to the greater Christian world are undeniable. This essay will engage the life, teaching, writings, and influence of the martyr Michael Sattler.
In Dante Alighieri’s poem, The Inferno, Dante uses a system of thinking called the fourfold analysis. The fourfold analysis consists of four thought provoking categories; historical, spiritual, moral/psychological, and political. All four can be found within his twentieth chapter that contains the fortune tellers and the diviners. Using the fourfold analysis we can understand the fortune tellers and diviners and why Dante is so pitiful towards them. Dante knows that they are in Hell for a reason, yet human compassion gets the best of him and Virgil must step in to keep Dante on track because it is not right for Dante to cry tears for the damned.
Nostradamus was said to have predicted many things. He predicted what he called as “the three antichrists.” The first is believed to be Napoleon. The second antichrist he predicted, in which is said by most as his most incredible prediction, is believed to be Hitler. He wrote of the second being called Hisler. He is also credited with predicting the French Revolution, the American Revolution and the deaths of the two Kennedy brothers.

Macbeth and Lord Voldemort both hear of a prophecy that tells what will happen in their future. In Macbeth’s case, he learns that he will be king but his son will not be. This means that he will be killed or put out of the throne. In Lord Voldemort’s case, he learns that there is a prophecy that a young boy will kill him. Although most people considered it useless to change the prophecy, they t...

“The most conspicuous… is probably their practice of obtaining supernatural power in a dream or vision…” (519). The Dionysian cultures believed that they could go on quests to achieve a vision of the future. Today, those quests are no farther than the telephone, advertisements on television, or on your computer screen. Everyday, people are introduced to different experiences where they can “find out their own future”. Societies have always wanted to know their futures. Recently though, the urgency to know one’s own future has increased dramatically. With the technological advances that have taken place in our society, fortune telling has become more apparent. Societies are feeling increasingly out of control of their own lives, and are going to these fortunetellers to feel more self-assured. “On the western plains they believed that when the vision ...
Faith in The Matrix and Christianity relays in the prophecy of someone special and unique that has the power to bring hope and peace to humanity. Both of these prophecies traveled from time to time, transferring this hope from old generations to future generations. Additionally, these prophecies were made by extra-ordinary people. For example, Jesus Christ’s coming was announced by an angel to Mary. On the other hand, the prophecy of Neo’s coming was made by the Oracle, a special program which its purpose is to bring imbalance to the matrix and to analyze the psychological parts of humans.
The historical record of the Jewish experience in France is rife with prejudice, discrimination, and violence. The French Enlightenment brought about increased tolerance for Jews, and many enlightened Christian thinkers, specifically Abbé Grégoire and Count Mirabeau, began to call for the emancipation of Jews (PPT 3).
The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield tells the story of a man who tries to learn and understand the nine key insights into life itself in an ancient manuscript that has been discovered in Peru. It predicts a massive spiritual transformation of society in the late twentieth century. We will finally grasp the secrets of the universe, the mysteries of existence, and the meaning of life. The real meaning and purpose of life will not be found in religion or in material wealth, but rather in things like auras. He comes across the insights in numerical order since that is how one must understand them. Overcoming an initial skepticism, the narrator's understanding grows with each insight. They include the following: 1. A Critical Mass. 2. The Longer Now. 3. A Matter of Energy. 4. The Struggle for Power. 5. The Message of the Mystics. 6. Clearing the Past. 7. Engaging the Flow. 8. The Interpersonal Ethic. 9. The Emerging Culture.
“I will put my words into the mouth of the prophet who shall speak to them everything that I command” (Dt, 18:18). Prophecy is said to be the voice of God, and a prophet is simply God’s ambassador, relaying the word of God to the people. However, it is not by any means his/her choice, for once a prophet is called upon by God and com...
The Soothsaying of the Vala begins with the priestess, the Vala, calling for the attention of everyone. She bids the high and low which encompasses everyone regardless of their status to listen to her. Soothsaying is along the lines of a supernatural ability such as witchcraft, fortune telling or experiencing visions of the past. She remembers back when the Jotuns raised her and that there were nine worlds in a tree. She calls it the fate tree and says it is located underneath the earth which may mean inside the earth or in the earth’s core and brings to mind an image of the earth resting on top of three or on a branch. In the earliest times some type of creature named Ymir lived alone. She says that there was no sand, sea, nor Earth. Ymir
René Descartes presented his readers to the thought of differentiating scholarly learning from church doctrine. He asserted science filled with myth and uncertainty could never advertise taking in or the headway of public opinion. Descartes reacted to the developing clash between these two powers with an endeavor to bring clarity. He was eager to test the acknowledged plans of his day and present change. Religion had not been independent from science previou...
