Being a True Disciple
"It is not impossible to be a true disciple if Jesus in the modern
world"
In our modern day world I don't believe it is impossible to be a
disciple but to be a true disciple and follower of Jesus would be
hard. There are many distractions for people in today's society,
family, career and materialistic goods. Religion is not seen as a
priority in modern day life it is seen as unnecessary and unimportant
part of life.
With the pressures and priorities of modern day life we don't seem to
have time to go to mass, stop and think or maybe just reflect on our
day to day lives. Pressures from the media can change people's views
on God, life, mass and even the Eucharist. With so many people wanting
careers for a successful life, with money they concentrate on
materialistic products and not the important things such as family,
love, friends and God. They work long hours, five days a week. People
in the emergency services cannot decide when to work or not, it's a
full time job. This does not leave much time for importance of
discipleship.
We do not realise how lucky we are to be able to practice out religion
freely without disapproval and receive the Eucharist as often as we
want. Many countries in the world do not allow freedom of religion and
they are forbidden to practice their religions, they must practice
these religions in secret of their own homes.
A lot of things that are being carried out throughout the world are a
contradiction to the Christian faith such as Euthanasia, adultery,
abortion etc, these are seen as morally incorrect and are strongly
disapproved of, yet they are present in modern day society.
Many people believe that it is more than possible to be a disciple in
today's world; they believe that we can do this by going to mass as
often as possible, spreading the word of God or even just being with
people that share our beliefs.

However, four main qualities of discipleship are highlighted in his letters, these are witness, obedience, chosen, and indwelling. Throughout time, the definition of what is considered to be “religion” has been proven to be quite a challenge. This is primarily due to the fact that religions continuously evolve over time as well as an individual’s perception and understanding about what religion seems to be. Despite this ongoing process of modifications when attempting to characterize and define religion, what is certainly constant is the fact that religion plays a great role in influencing societies and individuals historically (McGuire 5). In order for an individual to well integrate oneself into society and build a daily life, religious practices is essential to this process. Teachers around the time when Jesus lived thought that learning was such that the people who wanted to learn should come to them to be taught. But Jesus felt differently and rather than waiting for people to come to him, he went out to find them and then chose them to be his followers. He called them disciples and this word means one who learns. But Jesus chose his disciples carefully as we are told in Mark 1:16-20 and also in Mark 3:13-19. In the first passage, Jesus appoints his first four disciples, Simon, Andrew, James and John. Jesus said to them “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17) In Mark 2:13-17, Jesus calls up the fifth disciple, Levi who was a tax collector, and Jesus later renamed him Matthew. But Levi was not called in the same way as the other four disciples. Jesus was with him at the tax collector’s booth and Jesus simply said, “Follow me” (Mark 2:14) and he rose and followed Jesus.

The Unlikely Disciple is about a Brown University journalist student, Kevin Roose, who decides to spend one semester at Liberty University. He chooses to take this semester in order to order to get better insight on the evangelical community. Although originally Roose only wanted to shallowly integrate into the Christian community to gain a better perspective, by the end of the novel he realizes that you cannot pretend to be something you are not without being a little affected by it. One of the struggles Roose faces is dating Ana who is a female student at Liberty University. Even though there is clearly chemistry between the two, Roose opts out of dating Ana as he does not want to start a relationship based on the false pretenses he has created to fit in at the university. The students at Liberty University are subjected to a great deal of rules that most college students would vehemently disregard. These rules are reinforced by students who are RAs. The author describes being an RA at Liberty as “one of the most grueling jobs on the planet” (174). The college students are forbidden to smoke, drink, and curse. There is great variation in the rules as the students are also prohibited from watching R-rated movies, dancing, hugging more than three seconds, or having any sexual interaction with the opposite sex. For example, the guys on Roose’s dorm hall were caught watching the gory R-rated movie 300 and their punishment was to get “twelve [reprimands] to each person present,” “fined a combined $350,” and “the DVD was confiscated” (172). It is Not Possible to be a True Disciple of Jesus in the Modern World
Though there are many religions that are still practiced in the world, it is important to see what role they play in culture and thinking. When religion is taken in healthy amounts with a strong mind, religion can be a blessing and a gift to people everywhere. It can provide hope to people who need it the most, while inspiring others to take action and make positive changes. However, overdosing on religion can cause equal amounts of pain and anger.
A true spiritual leader follows the example of God. Here in the US we have several different religions being practiced everyday: like Zoroastrianism, Shinto, Muslim, Buddhism, Hinduism, and as well as Judaism and Christianity and even newer beliefs like scientology. Religion is a very important thing to people because it helps us find answers to some very difficult questions, namely what are we and why are we here. This is very important itself because knowing who we are is the basis of our beliefs and the foundation to everything that we do. (Neusner, 2009)
