Being a Disciple of Jesus and Its Effect on a Person's Life
Depending on who you are and where you come from, "good effect" can have a number of meanings. Some people can say that a "good effect" is taking heed of God's message to love one another, and showing kindness in little ways, or a "good effect" can mean deciding to give up your life to devote it to poor people or the sick, or by becoming a priest. However "good effect" can mean deciding to change your life from sinful ways, like drinking too much, taking drugs, or being a child abuser, and following God, and repenting for what you have done. This would have a good effect because they would be spreading the word of God and also, they would be helping people, by setting a good example of how to conduct themselves. On the other hand, some people may argue that being a follower of Jesus presents false hope in life after death and resurrection.
Mother Teresa is an example of Jesus having a good effect on a person's life. She devoted her life to helping the poorest of the poor in India. Some may say she lived in extreme poverty and that therefore following Jesus did not have a positive effect, but she lived until she was 88 and when she died, her life had been fulfilled. Through her self sacrifice of a rich and comfortable life, many poor people were helped and she really made a huge difference to so many lives.

Take for example, the ex Roman Catholic priest mentioned in the March 2004 edition of the mercury news. The headline reads "Former Priest pleads innocent to molestation charges." The article describes a young boy who was repeatedly sexually abused by a catholic priest. In this case, following the life of Jesus did not have a good effect on the life of the individual. He is using his position as a man of God to not get blamed for what he has done wrong. Not only has he abused the trust of the church and God, but he has also contributed to the lack of trust between priests and young people. However, some people argue that these paedophiles were not actually genuine catholic priests, but people who used the position of trust between the church and young people to get close to them.

What is the point of living? If you type this question into Google, you will get many of the following answers: leave a legacy, get rich, love and explore. The one answer that comes up a lot of times is to always be satisfied. We as humans think that we can be satisfied when we have a great career, family, kids, and lots of money. If we look in the bible at the book of Ecclesiastes we can see the story of a man that has everything he can possibly want. I like to call them the three W’s (Wisdom, wealth, women). Although he had all these things he still wasn’t satisfied. In the first verse in Ecclesiastes he starts off by saying “Meaningless! Meaningless!...Everything is meaningless.” Throughout this book we can see that the message is whatever materialistic things we want in life will never fulfill our lives, so we need to look at God and build a relationship with him because only then we will be fulfilled (plus we get to go to heaven). The author put it best “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for that it is the whole duty of everyone” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

The Unlikely Disciple is about a Brown University journalist student, Kevin Roose, who decides to spend one semester at Liberty University. He chooses to take this semester in order to order to get better insight on the evangelical community. Although originally Roose only wanted to shallowly integrate into the Christian community to gain a better perspective, by the end of the novel he realizes that you cannot pretend to be something you are not without being a little affected by it. One of the struggles Roose faces is dating Ana who is a female student at Liberty University. Even though there is clearly chemistry between the two, Roose opts out of dating Ana as he does not want to start a relationship based on the false pretenses he has created to fit in at the university. The students at Liberty University are subjected to a great deal of rules that most college students would vehemently disregard. These rules are reinforced by students who are RAs. The author describes being an RA at Liberty as “one of the most grueling jobs on the planet” (174). The college students are forbidden to smoke, drink, and curse. There is great variation in the rules as the students are also prohibited from watching R-rated movies, dancing, hugging more than three seconds, or having any sexual interaction with the opposite sex. For example, the guys on Roose’s dorm hall were caught watching the gory R-rated movie 300 and their punishment was to get “twelve [reprimands] to each person present,” “fined a combined $350,” and “the DVD was confiscated” (172). It has been said that Jesus was one hundred percent man and one hundred percent God. This is a concept that is hard to understand if you do not have the scriptural evidence to back up this fact. In the Old Testament the prophet’s, priest and Kings all spoke of someone who could bring redemption to the world that they could not. In Acts 10:38 it shows how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.” Even though Christ lived in the world he remained sinless and never once forgot his deity.
