Being Effective With Eating Disorders

Upon completing this group project it was discovered that both approaches to therapy are valid when it comes to treating and stabilizing individuals with eating disorders. Each approach has its strengths to offer to the therapeutic process, such as, identifying individual needs and equipping the client with the tools to change one 's thought process. For treatment to be effective with eating disorders, it has to address the cognitions or the dysfunctional assumption that has led to the maladaptive self-defeating harmful behaviors. Often individuals with eating disorders use their dysfunctional assumption with the intent to harm others as a form of control or power over others. Using ‘CBT or a person centered approach will help to identify these behaviors, and challenge the dysfunctional self-concept. Early intervention is important and can be effective if used appropriately and the behavior has not become as entrenched in thought or emotion. This allows for early recognition of distorted thinking patterns that often lead to uncontrollable eating disorders and maladaptive thought of self, shape and appearance. Early interventions allow for awareness of one’s distorted thinking before the patterns of thought become concrete, allowing treatment with behavioural therapy more effective. Prolonged dysfunctional thought patterns are more likely to reoccur and could become long standing where the individual constantly battles the illness for life. Once a therapeutic bond has been formed, this can lead to creativity, empathy, and skills formation necessary for lasting therapeutic effect. As stated by Johnson & Johnson (1988), “Students must feel safe enough to challenge each other’s ideas and reasoning” (p. 61). As nurses we will also need to develop a sense of self to be comfortable enough to recognize and incorporate others ideas This was an important moment, as it not only permitted us to have a better understanding of each other, it also allowed for us to respect each other’s perspective without it being forced on our current beliefs. Clearly, gaining knowledge in regards to the many approaches, the psychiatric nurse is enabling lifelong learning, in addition to contributing to the continued improvement of psychiatric nursing practice (College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses [CRPNBC], 2010).
