Attitude is a Learned Behavior
Attitude is a learned behavior that can be changed based on the individuals choice and wiliness to change. The Webster’s New World Dictionary defines attitude in three different ways; first is a bodily posture showing mood or action, second is a manner showing one’s feeling or thoughts and third is one’s disposition. In General Attitudes are the feelings and thoughts you have about yourself and how you interact with other people. Attitude plays apart of everything in society’s life, from taking your first steps, going to high school, choosing a college, getting a job and choosing a mate. If attitude makes us who we are, gives us our character, then the question I purpose to you is, can you really get an “attitude adjustment” or is our attitude defined at birth?
For centuries, people have been intrigued with the question of what is human about human nature. How much of people’s characteristics and attitudes comes from “nature” (heredity, unable to change) or how much is from “nurture” (the social environment, contact with others) and the ability to change. It is for certain that physical and mental abilities are established by heredity, such as ability at sports and mathematics. As well as the color of your eyes, the size of your nose and your mother’s freckles. While such basic orientations to life, like your attitude, are the result of the environment one lives in and thus fore can be changed.
So, what about the nurture side of the equation, or the environment that gives us our attitude? Culture is a system of ideas about the nature of the world and how people should behave in it that it shares—and shared uniquely—by members of a community, that continually judges ones actions, hen...

... that attitude can be changed or at least influenced by our environment.
Our attitude is a learned behavior that can be changed by the individual’s choice to make that change. I agree that a person’s attitude begins with their own personal feelings, values, and beliefs, but the knowledge of the values and norms of our culture also can define who we can be or should be. After all, if a person couldn’t change their attitude, then how could they grow and learn or just simply adapt to ones environment. For some parts of life, the blueprint is drawn by heredity; but for other parts, the individual is a blank slate, and it is entirely up to the individual to change what is written on that slate. You alone can make your density great by doing on simple thing “getting an attitude adjustment”. Attitude is your life, yours affects everybody and everybody’s affects you.
Have you ever thought about whether the way you are is based on your genetic makeup? Do you believe our environment shapes us into who we are, instead? In the psychology debate of nature versus nurture, I believe that nurture plays a big role in who
Dweck states “ The message is: you can change your mindset” (14). This means that we can change our mindset, plain and simple. One cannot say that you have either growth or fixed mindset only, because that simply is not true. However one can say that most have characteristics of both. This is what Dweck wants heard through her research. She wants people to understand that it is possible to change your mindset, along with some work and determination, and through that work you can gain growth mindset. So, what is growth mindset? Growth mindset is the ability to think and respond in positive manners throughout your life and the ability embrace challenges with a “never give up” attitude. Once again I would like to share with you this quote from Carol S. Dweck “ The message is: you can change your mindset” (14). In the end Dweck really does have the answer on the ability to reach your true potential… through growth mindset of course

In today’s society, one is constantly surrounded by individuals with different behaviors. Some will sacrifice his or her life for a complete stranger. However, there is some individuals who would take advantage of the weak and poor for his or her own personal gain. Now the question arises, what makes human beings behave the way they do? Being the topic of conflict of psychology for years, one usually turns to the nature verses nurture theory for the answer to that question. Some believes that a person is born with a certain personality, others believe it is an individual’s atmosphere that determines his or her attitude, and some even trusts the idea that it is a combination of genes and environment that dictates the conduct of an individual.
Culture is a society’s set of unique patterns of behaviors and beliefs (Rohall, D. E., Milkie, M. A., & Lucas, J. W. (2014). Social Psychology Sociological Perspectives (3rd ed.). NJ: Pearson). Culture can be identified in many ways, it can be identified by your family, the way you feel about certain things, your decision making, and so forth. For example, I was raised in a Mexican and sort of religious household so for me, my values and beliefs differ from other peoples’. My Mexican culture taught me to value our hard work and appreciate what we have in our lives. With that belief I grew up always appreciating what I had and even what I didn’t have at times. Another concept my culture taught me was to always respect my elders and show them manners regardless of their race,
How do we know when or how to change ourselves as people? Sometimes, we all need a shove from something or someone to help us better ourselves. The most dominant factors are kindness, fear, and regret. These three things can make us willing to go through the hassle and hard work of breaking out of a habit, whether it be putting your feet on the couch, or your attitude.
Michael Jordan, considered the greatest basketball player in history, once said, “If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” This quote portrays the mindset Jordan had while he was struggling to achieve his dreams. The effectiveness of his mindset proved that we can turn it into a powerful weapon that will help us excel in life. Michael Jordan had a positive mindset. He didn’t give up after failing the first time. He kept trying to get where he wanted. His mindset defined him, much like how our mindsets define us. Whether we are optimistic or pessimistic, it plays a huge role in our journeys. Someone who is pessimistic may never achieve his dreams because he constantly doubts himself. He believes that he will constantly fail. Those who have gained success embrace failure because that is what makes them stronger and smarter the next time they work toward their goal. Our mindset is what defines our success because it is what will make us work hard and put an effort into achieving our dreams, no matter how many failures come first.
Throughout my lifetime I mainly had a fixed mindset. I wouldn’t really listen to anyone around me and I was in my own little world. Many people tried to help me out of my little bubble. Then after middle school and going into high school, I started being more growth mindset. I started stepping out more and tried to get involved in more activities. Once I became a senior in high school I really stepped out and started getting more and more involved at my church and at school. Then once I came out of high school and started going to college classes I became more introverted and fixed mindset. I didn’t really bother others and they didn’t bother me. I stayed in my own bubble and I still haven’t
A mindset can be developed from many environmental factors such as friends, family, teachers, school, other individuals, and the overall aspects of life. Individuals are not just born with confidence or conscientiousness, yet they are more so developed and learned from environmental factors throughout life. A fixed mindset is more common for individuals to establish, instead of a growth mindset. A growth mindset understands that their basic characteristics can be strengthened while a fixed mindset just believes that their characteristics cannot be further changed or improved. According to Liisa Kyle who earned her Ph.D. in psychology claims that a
We as humans have always been fascinated with the unknown. We seek to conquer every frontier. Today, the final frontier is space. So, many people are very interested in rockets, the vehicle for conquering the final frontier. Most people have a general idea of how rockets work, but very few have an understanding of the physics behind their flight, which scientists spent many years perfecting.
People with a fixed mindset are usually not motivated to do challenging work, apply very little effort, lose confidence after mistakes, and are intimidated when things get difficult. And I have experienced some of these situations. I get less motivated when I have more work, don’t try my best, and I put myself down after low grades. I lost confidence in myself after every setback, but I should of been looking to learn from them. I should actually look back and see what I could have done differently after a setback instead of degrading my own morale. For example, I could change the way I approach a test if I really messed up on the last one, or I can stay motivated at every task at hand. I would love to have a growth mindset, but I just grew up with a fixed mindset. And it has basically made me lazy and procrastinate. I should get rid of my bad habits and develop a growth

Heredity Versus Environment - The Nature-nurture Controversy, Exploring Heredity And Environment: Research Methods, Beyond Heritability
Throughout our lives we have all been influenced by our environment and other outside forces. Our environment may change the way we think, act and behave in life. Since we are all products of our environment, it comes to no surprise that we, as humans, tend to behave in a society the same way others around us behave but at the same time we strive to find who we really are (Schaefer 73). Since birth, humans have always analyzed the world around them. With each day that passes, humans take in more and more information from the outside world. The information which humans obtain through their environment subconsciously influences the decisions people make throughout their daily life (Neubauer 16). On the other hand, our genetics also play a vital role in determining what type of person we are and what will we become.
Human life is absurd and there is no universal meaning, but humanity suffers from this inevitable fact so they try to find meaning through various created purposes to feel significant in their life. The absurdity of life is one of the biggest issues of philosophy because of the consequences it can cause in peoples lives. As human beings we desire purpose, meaning and order in life. Without the content of a meaningful life we feel lost and strive to find something that gives us meaning. We are all suffering from this unattainable goal to find a meaningful life. Albert Camus and Thomas Nagel agree with the fact that life is absurd but disagree on the right approach to life after realizing that life is without meaning.
