Research articles report both patient and nurse satisfaction scores are greatly influenced by implementation of bedside reporting (Evans, Grunawalt, McClish, Wood & Friese, 2012). Bedside reporting focuses on the patient in the medical or health profession that is what is important. Patient want to be satisfied not only with medical care but also with nursing care. Although nurses do not wield the power of doctors in hospital settings, they are still able to effectively compensate for a doctor’s deficits in a variety of ways to assure patient recovery. Nurses meet a patient’s physical needs, which assures comfort and dignity Nurses explain and translate unfamiliar procedures and treatments to patients which makes the patient a partner in his own care and aids in patient compliance. Nurses communicate patient symptoms and concerns to physicians so treatment can be altered if necessary and most importantly, nurses provide emotional support to patients in distress.
Nurses have long been known for their attention to patient care. The reason many nurses have entered this profession is due to their desire to care for people. The overwhelming responsibilities of documentation, chart reviews, verifying orders and medications, monitoring lab results, among others, leaves the direct care of the patient to another, possibly unqualified, staff member. Bolton, Gassert, and Cipriano (2008) estimate that a mere 23-30% of a nurse’s day is spent providing care to a patient. This leaves the greater part of a 12-hour shift performing some kind of paperwork. In fact, the inability to provide more patient care has been cited as a reason many nurses leave their job, and the profession altogether (Bolton et al., 2008).
Two potential barriers to the Patient-Family Centered Care model are time and patient/family expectations. Nursing is a demanding job that is known for it's fast paced and often hectic environment. While caring for several patients at a time, it might be difficult to make time to discuss and involve patients and their family in all aspects of their care. This could lead to the patient/family feeling left out or even lead to fear about why information if being kept from them. To address this barrier I will set aside time to spend with each of my patients solely dedicated to discussion about the care they are receiving as well as provide an opportunity to voice questions and concerns.
Since the days of Florence Nightingale, nurses have strived to provide their patients with the best care possible. Nursing theory was developed by desire and provides a theoretical framework on which the nurses challenge themselves to improve patient experience. Nursing in the twenty first century has taken many different directions by assuming more responsibility, and some have argued that the evolution of the profession has come with a price of caring less. To improve our patient satisfaction scores, the Practice Committee will implement the use of Jean Watson’s Theory of Caring into the clinical nursing practice at the Community Medical Center.

Nurse rounding is important to hospital-based practice because it directly impacts patient satisfaction (Blakley, Kroth, & Gregson, 2011). It serves as a method to improve quality of care by allowing nurses to routinely visit their patients and provide for any needs while also anticipating any safety concerns. Patients’ overall perceptions of hospital experiences are heavily dependent on how successful nurses are in satisfying the basic needs (Blakley et al., 2011). Rounding permits nurse-patient interaction and communication periodically, allowing observation and exchange of relevant information and also implementation of proper interventions. Nurses must practice rounding competently with compassion. By doing so, the patient has the opportunity to be involved in their own care which builds a trusting and positive relationship between the nurse and the patient, ultimately leading to improved quality of care and safety.

In fact, it is important to the patient’s healing. Before a patient comes to my floor, I look up their history and reasons for admission. This is the gathering or pre-orientation phase. The orientation phase for the bedside nurse would be when the patient arrives on the floor. The nurse introduces their self to the patient and begins establishing trust. The nurse asks the patient questions to see what their expectations are and clarifies the expectations of the hospital or unit. The nurse then explains the plan of care to the patient and answers any questions. In the working phase, the nurse is the patient’s advocate and addresses any problems the patient has. The nurse assures the patient they will research any problems and find out the answers as quickly as possible. Once the nurse finds the answers, he/she relays the information to the patient and the family. He/she may give the patient educational materials, show them a video or simply provide an explanation from the provider. During the resolution phase, the nurse provides discharge information. He/she answers any questions related to discharge and provides the patient with instructions post discharge from the hospital. If the nurse has established a relationship and trust with the patient, the hospital stay and discharge should leave the patient confident that they are well enough for discharge home or to a facility.
The HCAHPS/Press Ganey survey greatly impacts the nursing population. Nurses directly provide care to patients. They are those who care for, work with, and make the most contact with patients. Therefore, it is the face of the nurse that usually comes to mind when patients think back to their care at the hospital. It is the nurse whom the patient will remember when filling out the HCAHPS/Press Ganey survey.
