There are many civic organizations that help make our society healthy. It’s very important to support these organizations. There are many ways to support them by volunteering your time and making donations. An important aspect of a healthy civic society includes organizations like the Bedford County Humane Society, Saxton Volunteer Fire Company, and Habitat for Humanity because these organizations provide assistance to those who are in need. The Bedford County Humane Society gives care to dogs and cats through donations from businesses, fundraisers, and individual people. They’re a no-kill animal shelter for dogs and cats. They first opened in 1989 and have rescued thousands of dogs and cats. They have rescued animals that have been abused and neglected. They provide rehabilitation for mental and physical abuse. Around ninety-eight percent of their rescues come from Bedford and Fulton Counties. They have placed thousands of dogs and cats in loving homes. You can go to their website and put an application in to adopt a dog or cat. On their web site, you can also see the animals, make donations, and read about the history of the humane society. They are always in need of volunteers to walk, bath, and socialize with the animals. These animals are given the best possible vet care. They are non-profit, which means everything is donated through the community and fundraisers. I did a fundraiser this spring for them to complete my community service hours for high school. We got over seven hundred dollars in donations and a van full of dog and cat food and supplies. They go above and beyond to help the community by responding to fires, auto accidents, ambulance calls, and so much more. These services are all voluntary, so they don’t get paid to go on these runs. These men and women use their own personal time to help our community in a big way. They provide fire and ems staffing twenty-four hours a day with over one hundred-fifty members. This year alone they have gone on four hundred and fourteen EMS calls and one hundred and sixty-four fire and rescue calls. That is an enormous amount of work on their part and they never ask for anything in return. The main service areas are within seven municipalities, that provide dual-dispatch response with three other companies. Within the company are state-certified instructors for many different rescues, including technical, heavy, animal and confined space rescues.
