Career Research Paper:
Since I was very little I used to enjoy surfing websites and using search engines to answer my questions. I was amazed at how easy internet makes our lives by connecting computers across different places and countries and how easily we can transmit information through World Wide Web. In 19th century, Charles Babbage developed the first computing device. Through the 20th century, Analog computers were used to meet more sophisticated needs of the people during this time. The idea of a modern computer came along in 1936, when Alan Turing wrote a paper about the modern computer and its functionalities. He developed a ‘Universal Machine’ which was intended to perform the task of all other machines, it could compute almost anything that it was programmed to do. This is how the first programmable device came into existence. Modern computers have the ability to compute whatever is instructed to it by programming languages. Programming languages carry out instructions for how to computer should function. The first High-level programming language was Plankkalkul, then a series of other languages including c, c++, c#, java which are used today to pass instructions to the computer. Even modern websites are made using these programming languages. The internet was born in 1960’s and the first website which could transfer information from one computer to another was made in 1981. Since the internet was not very fast before not a lot could be made available, but it was still reliable, and hence was used by military, scientists, educators, government and doctors. Computers were in development from as early as the 1950’s, but the general public wouldn’t hear of the World Wide Web until the 1980’s. By the year 2000, the internet was accessible to the general public from their home computers. It was used mainly for e-mailing, online shopping and research, but with its growing popularity, the World Wide Web was quick to expand its content. We can now, in the present day, access the internet on a number of platforms such as mobile phones, laptops and PCs, and even Smart Televisions, which makes a vast difference to the platforms people used 30 years ago.
The career path that I have chosen was computer engineering. I chose this career because I have spent my entire life around computers, and had experience working with programming languages and the hardware. I gained further interest in computer engineering after I took an AP Computer Science class in high school. In the class I was required to use programming languages to create different types of programs which challenged me. This inspired me to want to learn even more about the computer science field and to learn more java script and programming languages.
The internet as we know it developed from a government project to send secure information from one remote computer to another. The DARPA (Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency) began work on the internet in 1973 under the guiding influence of Larry Roberts. He designed the Arpas first network where a machine called an Interface message processor (IMP) would connect individual sites, route messages, scan errors and confirm the arrival of messages at their intended destination. A number of innovations led to the development of the modern internet. First was the development of the computerised bulletin board (today's message boards) by Ward Christensen and Randy Seuss, second was the standardisation of internet access through TCP (transfer Control Protocol) and IP internet protocol, and third was the development of software for information retrieval which would become the WWW. In the early 1900’s many different types of computers and parts to a computer were invented. For example, in 1936, Konrad Zuse made the first freely programmable computer. Seven years later, John Atanasoff & Clifford Berry invented the ABC Computer. Later on, in 1962, Steven Russell & MIT created the first computer game “Spacewar Computer Game”. Two years later, Douglas Engelbart was the one to invent the computer mouse and windows. This was a major invention because now many people were able to use the computer easily and in that time period, faster.
According to World Wide Web pioneer Timothy Berners-Lee, the World Wide Web's initial purpose was to provide "an interactive world of shared information through which people could communicate with each other and with machines" (1996: p 1). Originally developed at the European Center of Nuclear Energy (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, the Web emerged in 1989 as a way for Dr. Berners-Lee and some of his distant associates to work on particle physics projects. He designed a method of links that was usable by all computers and hypertext was the language; we know it as http. With its knowledge-sharing capabilities, the invention of the Web quickly spread to universities and science research communities all over the world. Since it was primarily used for text, actual web design in these early days was not particularly significant. Around this same time, researchers at the National Center for Super Computing Applications at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana also worked and researched web technology. In 1992, only 26 hosts were serving web sites.
The computer is a very important tool used in education. “During the past three decades, computers have become the most talked about, written about, and ubiquitous machines ever to be imposed upon mankind.”( Rockart, 1995, p. 55). The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator) is said to be the first computer. It was a “huge machine having thousands of vacuum tubes and consuming vast amounts of electrical power.” ( Merrill, 1996, p.54). By the early 1970’s, the regular computer was invented. Around the same time, something called the Internet emerged. The Internet is a worldwide network. It connects LAN’s, WAN’s, and other regional networks from all over the world together into one global network. Recently, the Internet has become very popular. It was predicted in 1996 that by the year 2000, most universities and many homes would have Internet connections. (Merrill, 1996). This prediction was correct. Becoming a computer programmer would be great because there are many options in this career by having the ability to produce an operating system, or a game for the world. Computer programmers have many opportunities in life to find a job they would love. Programmers can work independently, or in a big company. Programmers have and are creating the future for computers.
Web design is related to design of web pages and web sites. Successful web designers should have good design skills, should have an aptitude towards drawing, and have knowledge of web-specific factors such as the image compression, screen resolution, website architecture, accessibility, usability, etc. A website might have a host of features such as interactive applications, e-commerce, search engine optimization, animations, etc. All this is the responsibility of the web designer.
Software publishers make up to $93,380 and computer system designers make up to $79,030 on average as recorded in the month of May 2016. Entry-level engineers make up to $60,000 while senior engineers make up to $111,688. Even people who just started their position make a lot of money and the longer an engineer is in the career and the more experience they gain will get they a bigger paycheck; this shows the value of this career ("Computer Programmers Career, Salary, and Education Information," sec. 11). Opportunities in the field are extremely available to qualified personel. I have heard first-hand accounts of people being yanked out of collage for a programming position at $80,000 a year. With the expanding of the market for technology, comes the need for programers of all backgrounds. Job-security is pretty good as long as you dont kill somebody(wich recently happened at a dot-com-start-up). And the outlook for promotions is good considering the shortage of programers.

Having started college, I have begun the next step towards achieving my goal, but not without complications. Although I remained in the CS program for much of the first semester, I switched degrees about two-thirds of the way through. I found that I would be learning mostly computer programming in the CS degree and would not learn many useful skills pertaining to my goal.
Computers are probably the most important invention of this century if not of all time. Right now people use computers for just about everything in the world and they are becoming a necessity in peoples’ lives just as many other new technologies. To say you cannot use a computer this day and age is almost like saying you are illiterate. In order for computers to function and be accessible to people there must be applications or instructions for the computer. In order to make these applications one must write them by programming in a certain computer language. These languages are usually somewhat hard to learn and many people shy away from them. As technology has progressed there has been the development of new and easier programming languages but it is still hard for children and others without much computer experience to learn. Since there is this dilemma in the world today, the many computer scientists and computer experts have come together to discuss new ways of approaching the problem. One solution to this problem was the development of visual languages such as Visual C++ and Visual Basic. There also new languages being developed and improved on such as XML and Ruby. Many other languages are being developed at this moment and someday there will be languages simple enough for everyone to use.
If nineteenth century was an era of the Industrial revolution in Europe, I would say that computer and Information Technology have domineered since the twentieth century. The world today is a void without computers, be it healthcare, commerce or any other field, the industry won’t thrive without Information Technology and Computer Science. This ever-growing field of technology has aroused interest in me since my childhood.
The computer evolution has been an amazing one. There have been astonishing achievements in the computer industry, which dates back almost 2000 years. The earliest existence of the computer dates back to the first century, but the electronic computer has only been around for over a half-century. Throughout the last 40 years computers have changed drastically. They have greatly impacted the American lifestyle. A computer can be found in nearly every business and one out of every two households (Hall, 156). Our Society relies critically on computers for almost all of their daily operations and processes. Only once in a lifetime will a new invention like the computer come about.
