At seven years old, I was dressed in my brand new Punky Brewster sneakers, had my seventy count marker set, and new backpack; I was ready for the second grade! I will never forget the nerves of the first day of school, the smell of a brand new box of crayons, or my teacher. It was in that very moment that I knew what I was meant to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. Fast-forward almost thirty years; my life has taken many unexpected turns along the way. I have been married and divorced. I have become a mom to three amazingly annoying monsters. I made the decision two weeks before my thirty-second birthday. I had support from family and friends. I was probably just as excited at thirty-two years old walking into my first day of class as I was at seven walking into the second grade. On my first day of class, I made a commitment to myself; if I was going to put in the time and effort to go back to school, I was going to give it my all. I was determined (and still am) to graduate with a 4.0 GPA. I worked my butt off for two years at our local community college in Austin, and when we moved to Arizona, I was excited to enroll at the University of Phoenix. The struggles of balancing work, being a mom, and a student seemed overwhelming at times, but I knew if this was important it wasn’t going to just be easy. Nothing worth having comes easy.
