Introduction to your Topic: Basketball was invented in 1891 by a man named Dr. James Naismith. He wanted it to be a game that people would enjoy and have fun playing. Michael Jordan once said, “Just play, Have fun, Enjoy the Game.” To Michael jordan basketball isn’t a game, it’s a talent. In 1998 Michael Jordan won his last championship of his NBA career and was excited to see what the future held for basketball. Other than the point guard the coach is the second most important position on the court. Coaching the game is important and it take time and dedication in order to accomplish it. My topic is over the ways of being a coach and ways you can improve yourself as a coach in order to be success. The expectations of being a coach is to understand that in order to improve you must be able to work and give time into the game so that you can be successful as a coach.
I expect to find ways on how to improve ways on becoming a coach and being successful.
Research: In basketball you must understand that you will lose and you must be able to get better as a coach that way. Tony Gentilcore wrote an article on ways to become a better coach and he understand what you must do in order to succeed. He has 7 ways on becoming a better coach and those ways are Observing other coaches, It is about more than just strength training, Video tape yourself coaching, Don’t be one dimensional/know your athletes, Read more coaching material, Get out there and coach, and last is Give back. As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. My senior project is about being a coach and how it can be difficult and not an easy task. I wanted to show others that being a coach is something that takes time and effort in order to accomplish it. Being a coach is not a fun job but it is a job that will help you in the future. Coaching is an experience that not a lot of people get to go through but those who do become not just better people but they become teachers to others in troubling times and in time of need. Coaching gives you and also shows you that being helpful and courteous to others actually helps you out as a person and it also helps out the players you’re coaching to be better people and to be kind and not take things in the wrong way and to show them a better way that will help them in their life.
In the book, "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, he talks about the importance of a teacher and coach as a role model for kids. He talks about his successes he had in coaching, the lessons he has learned, and the ones he has taught. In the book, you will get to walk through his life from when he was a little kid and first fell in love with basketball to when he retired from active coaching at UCLA in 1975. He also talks about his "Pyramid of Success" and the traits that every player should have.
However, this is not really a direct correlation to the coach’s effectiveness in a particular sport, being that there are many other factors in coaching a team other than game records. The coach’s job is to enhance the athlete physically, socially, and psychologically, winning is only considered a by-product of that job (Gillham, Burton, & Gillham, 2013). Gillham, Burton, and Gillham (2013) focused on developing a Coaching Success Questionnaire-2 to allow a means of evaluating other aspects of a coach’s interaction with their athletes as both a research and coach development tool. A sample group of athletes at the varsity and club level ranging from ages 18 to 25 was used to develop the questionnaire by asking their perceptions of their coaches.
From most of the questions I asked, they were a few of the basic things I would need in order to be a great coach. One of the main questions was taking criticism from fans. Growing up I was extremely blessed having an incredible coach at every level of sport I participated in. From those experiences I know how much a coach can make a difference in your life. For that reason my dream job is coaching college basketball at any division. It does not matter to me what level, because kids at the D-3 level need just as much guidance and help as student athletes at the D-1 level. During my coaching career I hope to blend two leadership styles in particular together in order to make my athletes better men, but also to keep the game they love fun to play. I feel by taking the Charismatic Leadership style’s enthusiasm and loyalty and mixing it with a Transformational Leaders innovation and emphasis on change, I can be an extremely effective and power leader for my student athletes.
A proper coaching philosophy contains principles which improve character development, teach step by step tactical and technical skills, form proper progressive physical training regimens, and carefully utilize team management to handle and control problems with administrative issues. A coach with a sound philosophy should mold a team with strong cohesion, and he should treat players not only as teammates, but as family and friends who are encouraged to develop communication and lifelong learning of skills through positive support and role modeling from the coach (Mergelsberg, 14-15). Becoming a coach has different ways. It can take some college, often teachers must teach in a field that matches their bachelor’s degree. Now there are coaches that teach as well or athletic coordinators. Athletic coordinators are coaches that deal with just sports and do not teach. Those have to go through a different process that regular coaches. For becoming a coach some have to know some health levels. With being a coach , athletes often get hurt and need to know how to properly take care of it. Sometimes when wanting to coach a specific sport you may have to have some background with that sport. Legendary coach John Wooden once said “A coach must never forget that he is a leader and not merely a person with authority”. This, I believe is a very important part of coaching, because as a coach you are looked not only as an authority figure but as a role model. I would not be the athlete or person that I am today, if it were not for the role models and coaches that pushed me to be the best that I could be. They were people that I was able to look up to athletically as well as people I knew I could trust. Having a good coaching philosophy is also a large part of being a respectable coach. A coaching philosophy is a set of values and beliefs that a coach develops to help covey his coaching style.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years.
