In Virginia Heffernan’s article “Against Headphones” she is arguing against the use of headphones. In her argument, she explains how the use of headphones leads to the risk of permanent hearing loss in teenagers and children. She also argues that headphones help isolate people and that people should start listening to music etc. together as a family. She uses several kinds of argumentative strategies which include: euphemism, propaganda such as the testimonial device, and the rhetorical appeals pathos, ethos, and logos. Heffernan’s argument in her article is effective because she has plenty of logic, facts, and statistics to support her thesis. She also tugs on her audience’s heartstrings by using their emotions. The strengths in her article such as the many facts she put in it greatly outweighed the weaknesses in it.

More than any other rapper, Dr. Dre was responsible for moving away from the avant-noise and political stance of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions, as well as the party vibes of old school rap. Instead, Dre pioneered gangsta rap and his own variation of the sound, G-Funk. BDP's early albums were hardcore but cautionary tales of the criminal mind, but Dre's records with N.W.A. celebrate the hedonistic, amoralistic side of gang life. Dre was never much of a rapper -- his rhymes were simple and his delivery was slow and clumsy -- but as a producer, he was extraordinary. With N.W.A. & C.A. he melded the noise collages of the Bomb Squad with funky rhythms.

With the requirement for more beats, DJ Kool Herc was the first to DJ with two turntables. It didn't take yearn for the DJ to end up noticeably a critical factor in the development of Hip-Hop. The Beat Generation was an influence on the American society during the twentieth century on how they portrayed the way of the American dream through performing arts. It all began in the 1950’s where a bunch of writers got together to right about how much they resented the postwar society (Sterritt, 1). It was right after War World II had past and the postwar age was very unsettling for the beat writers. It was turning into a conservative lifestyle and the beats wanted a way of showing that there writings would make an impact of what and how they thought of society and postwar. They too, like many others were effected greatly by the war and wanted a way of rebelling towards all the pain they went through during the war. This began the introduction of the Beat Generation.

The label “Beat Generation” was first publicized in a 1952 New York Times Magazine article entitled, “This is the Beat Generation.” In this article, author John Clellen Holmes states that “beat” means “More than mere weariness,” involving “a sort of nakedness of mind, and, ultimately, of soul; a feeling of being reduced to the bedrock of consciousness.” (Holmes) These feelings became the inspiration for the Beat writers and from them sprang ideas that permeated throughout society. Major interests among the Beats were freedom, self-expression, and a rejection of mainstream ideologies (such as those governing drugs, sex, and spirituality). (Scheibach 213)
