What does it mean to be an American?

Often an American is referred to as a person living within the United States of America. However, there are two continents with the name of America; North America and South America. So why do not all the people living on both continents not receive the name American? According to the dictionary the term American is defined as "pertaining to the United States of America or its inhabitants." However, in some ways the term can be used as reference to both North America and South America. The dictionary 's second definition of the word American, "Pertaining to North America or South America, of the Western Hemisphere." Such as when saying "the American continents." It means to be born within the United States of America, or legally move and obtain citizenship into the United States. It means to uphold the legacy on which the United States was founded upon. To be an American you should not be limited by race, gender, religion, etc. This is a country of freedom. To be an American, is to live your dreams and make the world a better place. Even people who live in America aren 't necessarily considered American if they don 't contribute anything to someone else. It doesn 't have to be a national movement. Slowly, every little act will build up and make the world an overall better place. Being American means having the right to pursue happiness. The question, "What does it mean to be an American?" is a hard thing to define. The roots have to dissected and then each branch must be examined. But to sum it up, being American means: to fight for freedom and equality. Without these principles, the world would not be able to function. Despite whether or not you live within the borders of the United States, if these principles are upheld and fought for, you have the makings of a true
