The Bay of Pigs was a covert operation planned and financed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the U.S. Government that took place on April 17, 1961 with the purpose of overthrowing Cuban Dictator, Fidel Castro's communist regime. As tensions between the United States and Cuba increased due to the direction of the Cuban Revolution, in March 1960, then President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized the CIA to train and arm 1,400 Cuban exiles in Guatemala in preparation of the Cuban invasion. Unfortunately for the U.S. Government and the CIA, their plan was a complete failure after Castro’s anticipation of a U.S attack came to fruition.

On March 19, the Joint Chief of Staff’s outlined their evaluation of the plan, which consisted of the CIA training facility in Guatemala. The specifics of the plan concluded that the invasion could be carried out covertly, but the overall success of the mission depended upon the U.S.’s anticipation of an internal uprising within Cuba’s borders. Much to the surprise of the exiles and the CIA operatives who were listening in as the events played out, Castro’s army was ready and waiting for the attack. The invasion was a massive failure, and caught no one off guard with exception of the exile fighters and the American government. Within two days of the initial landing at the Bay of Pigs, Castro’s army had already captured 1,200 exiles, while another 114 died in combat.
