The Battle of Gen X and Gen Y
There¡¦s no doubt about it, the newest diversity issue in the workplace is age diversity. Many organizations have finally figured out how to recruit young talent only to watch them drive down a collision course with seasoned employees over issues like work ethic, respect for authority, dress code and every work arrangement imaginable. And they're not sure what to do about it.
With this paper, I decided to take this concept because of the people that I have to work with on a continual basis. They are usually people from the Generation X trying to communicate with Generation Y. Just the other day I heard from someone I am working with, ¡§Those god d*&# young kids don¡¦t want to work. Then they have to ask ¡¥Why do I have to learn this anyways?¡¦¡¨ I just sit back, smile, and think to myself there has to be an easier way in getting the information highway open to people no matter what the age. Good communication skills are essential to get any message across and there are many times our verbal and written messages are not received and interpreted as intended. That is why I chose to look at the Generations of X and Y.
I first had to define what a generation is. A generation, loosely defined, is a group of people who can be demographically identified by biological trends and have shared experiences (Stephens Generation X Site, 2004).
I did a little research first on the Generation Y babies (1980-1994). These young adults are in a league all their own. This generation has a hopeful outlook, a determined work ethic, and gets turned off by promiscuity (Mcai-mn.org, 2004). This generation also likes a direct communication approach. No surprise, they get along well with the over sixty generation. They have a global perspective, and this may be due to the pace of technological change in the last twenty years that promotes communication without barriers. When you look at this group closer, they are able to adapt rapidly, innovate constantly, accept others easily and rebound quickly. They have the time, tools, and the talent to create a better world and better results.
Now those Generation X¡¦s have there own fond little quirks too! They were brought up on television, Atari 2600s and personal computers. They are the generation that was raised in the 1970s and 1980s, and saw this country undergo a selfish...

... 30 years of age. Considering that the average starting salary of a college graduate in 2000 hovered around $38,000, while more and more organizations are figuring out ways to flex schedules, work locations, and job descriptions, Gen Yers may be more realistic than those who scoff at their ambition.
I haven¡¦t found out yet if it has worked or not. I am sure hoping it is because when researching this topic it brought me to my own realizations on what I expect. I need to place more value on asking people what they expect instead of placing my own biases on what I think they want.

Since both authors can relate to both age groups, they have written this article to describe the reasons behind Gen Y’s characteristics and allow older generations a chance to understand their younger counterparts. The article is written not towards Gen Y but instead is written for their critics. Since the article allows readers inside the lives of Gen Y members, it is directed at people who do not already understand this generation and all it has to offer to the world. The authors’ knowledge of the criticisms that Gen Y faces allows them to portray their purpose to intended audiences. They do all of this while remaining mindful of older generations that work full time and live busy lives by breaking the article up with headings and subheadings that allow readers to read only sections at a
...internationally and has often been called ‘Harry Potter and the Holocaust’, a young girl’s difficult yet determined journey towards maturity. However, there are some who argue that a book so sad and sentimental is hardly a suitable read for teenagers. In Zusak’s own country, the book was published for a more mature audience and I think it does require a grown-up head to interpret the complicated emotions portrayed in here. Still, reading it can be a life-changing experience for this book comes with a message of hope. Liesel is the embodiment of that hope, a personification of love and generosity that even Death comes to love and respect. Read The Book Thief for it’s a lesson for life and food for thought for our generation. Read it for it shows one how to hope, and above all, read it for Death, the narrator with a heart, who confesses that he is haunted by humans.
The Book Thief is a book written by Markus Zusak, shining in the brilliancy of a holocaust novel it captures the hearts of literature lovers and history fanatics both. The story takes place in holocaust Germany and focuses on the story of a girl named Liesel Meminger. The story starts with her at nine years old and when the story ends she is well in to the fourteenth year of her life. This story is the story of a girl, a girl who learns to read, a girl who learns how to hide in the shadows, a girl who stands strong in a place of mistrust and pain; this story is of the type that takes your breath away.
How adoption and twin studies have influenced the “nature verses nurture debate” has been a focal point for many researchers and people around the world which has caused controversy and many views regarding the topic. “Twin studies look into behaviour in identical and none identical twins and adoption studies separate the effect of nature from nurture, or at least do more successfully than twin studies.” ("The Usefullness of Twin Studies and Adoption Studies | psuea7", 2011, p.1) These studies are used to provide plenty of strong and reliable evidence that and positively influence the Nature vs. Nurture debate. “The Nature vs. Nurture debate is the scientific, cultural, and philosophical debate about whether human culture, behaviour, and personality are caused primarily by nature or nurture. Nature is often defined in this debate as genetic or hormone-based behaviours, while nurture is most commonly defined as environment and experience.” (("Nature vs. Nurture", 2014, p.1) Many controversial debates have surrounded this issue and many researchers are trying to find evidence to justify if twin and adoption studies have an effect on the nature vs. nurture debate. Twin and adoption studies have had a positive influence on the nature-nurture debate because research and evidence has identified different issues and quality information to help the nature-nurture debate evolve. This essay will outline these positive influences and will elaborate on the research and evidence that has helped the nature-nurture debate. The three influences of twin and adoption studies that will be discussed are the influence of researching the affects of behavioural issues such as schizophrenia, the influence of undergoing research on the drinking affects an...
In the article “It’s Not About You” by David Brooks, Brooks takes a different perspective on this current generation. Many of the past generation huff at the thought of the new age group. Brooks has an incredible, somewhat biased opinion relating to the new generation, which is not unusual since he is from the current generation. Brooks discusses and explores the idea that the current generation is expected to grow up, get educated, get married and then have children. Brooks speculates that the new generation will be less family-orientated and maybe more adventurous and more about just living life and getting to experience things. Overall, Brooks wrote something different from most stories regarding generations.
For me it was Sunday morning cartoons, little did I know until about the third grade that we didn’t have cable and my cartoons and other shows on sunday morning were actually a few weeks old compared to my classmates that were getting the most current and up to date stuff. That trend continued with my Facebook page coming about four years after the start of the website. Myspace wasn’t even on my radar because my start to the internet in general was a late one. Their style, their vocabulary, their slang, though not necessarily bad, it’s different. They are much more mainstream than I am or was at their point in life I had a smartphone before I left highschool, even though I got it my senior year, a laptop that same year, and the glories of internet searching since my late middle school years. Perhaps my poor beginnings allowed me to identify more with my older sibling who is part of Gen-X. She remembers the CD size CD players we had to carry around perfectly still in order to listen to music. I believe she even bought be a backpack one year in elementary school that came with it’s own CD case, which would be rare and practically obsolete for most people today, especially 8 year olds. The times change so much faster now than they did when I was younger, that is something I believe the Penultimate Millennials share with the older generations and that the last bunch of Millennials appear to not
Currently there are 3 major generations in the workforce, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. The two biggest clash is seen between the largest generation gap, Boomers and Generation Y. The two generations have contradictory work preferences. “Boomers obsession with work vs Generation Y's flexibility, Baby Boomers preference for autonomy and Generation Y's for collaboration and working in teams, Baby Boomers respect for workplace hierarchy against Generation Y's preparedness to challenge management and so on” (Helyer & Lee, 2013). “Some generational differences can be addressed through effective human resource management. For example, organizations train managers to provide frequent feedback to members of Generation Y, and they show respect for older generations’ hard work and respect for authority by asking them to mentor younger workers” (Raymond, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2014).
The Baby Boomer generation consists of those born between 1946 and 1964. Like the Veterans before them, Baby Boomers also shared significant, “life-defining social changes such as the civil rights movement,
The CDC recommends a minimum of 7-8 hours a night for adults, but many adults fall far below this range.[3,4], However, the recommendation does not take into consideration people’s different lifestyles, which might necessitate getting even more sleep. Thus, it is advisable to consult a health professional to determine the right amount of sleep for each individual. Much of poor academic performance and even physical accidents can be prevented by eliminating sleep deprivation. According to a survey by the CDC, 7% of 25-34 year olds fell asleep while driving during the previous 30 days before being surveyed. Over ⅓ of all adults report unintentionally falling asleep in the same time period. Alarmingly, the Department of Transportation estimates that drowsy driving is responsible for 1550 fatalities, and 40,000 injuries
To begin with, this play is filled with comedy but also conflicts between characters. Helena is the kind of woman who has no self-esteem. This is because she does everything to be loved back by a man that doesn’t love her and that is Demetrius. Helena represents a character of a woman that is desperate of having love. In other words, Helena is different from Hermia because she’s an insecure woman full of jealousy. Helena tries to do everything to get Lysander away from her old best friend Hermia. She thinks that love can be found by letting the one you love do anything to you. Consequently, Hermia believes that lo...
The play is directed in Athens Greece, is made to be though provoking to the audience and bring them to question what they know is love; it starts out with unhappiness for Hermia, because she is getting no choice in who she loves. Hermia’s father Egeus, is her creator and must abide by his wishes to whom she’ll marry or love. If Hermia doesn’t marry Demetrious, her father’s approved choice, Theseus the Duke
Drinking and driving is a serious and dangerous problem around the world for many people. Many people every year are killed or injured because of drunk drivers. When a person’s blood alcohol content, known as BAC, is over the legal limit he becomes much more impaired and are at a higher risk of hurting himself or others while driving on the road. The majority of people who drive when under the influence of drugs or alcohol do not believe that their skills are affected until after they face a challenging or dangerous situation. It is then they realize their coordination and ability to think and respond according to the certain situation is affected. Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs make people drowsy, causes problems with focusing
As generations come and go, they each gain a variety of individual values, attitudes, and goals that separates them apart from other generations. Each of our generations has played a role to get to where we are today. The older generations have played a big role in shaping my generation by offering more help to us. Because of all the help that the older generation offers my generation seems to have developed a different attitude about life and themselves. Along with open mindedness is easily seen among my generation. These numerous aspects all make up my generation and how we live today.
This is important to note due to the explanation it helps give for why Victor acts the way he does and struggles to learn. It also explains why he can’t analyze people’s facial expressions, since the part of the brain, the amygdala, that helps in facial recognition is under active in autism patients. Also the following, “ Stereotypical behaviours such as echolalia, twirling, rocking, flicking and hand flapping... act as self-calming strategies for children with autism. Despert (1965) interpreted common obsessive behaviours as defences against the overwhelming anxiety experienced by children with autism,” are signs that are mentioned by Alinda, Furniss, and Walter in the journal article entitled “ Anxiety in High Function Children with Autism.” These signs are actually presented by Victor in the film The Wild Child. For example the first instance in which this acknowledged is toward the beginning of the film (time: 21:00) when Victor is being observed and he keeps rocking back and forth. Another instance in which we can note signs of Autism is when a key is misplaced (time: 52:00), and Victor keeps putting it back in its proper place, thus showing obsessiveness mechanism of Autistic children, which is seen as coping. As a result these circumstances show that the effects that Autism has on his brain affect the actions in which he
Psychologists have debated the argument of nature vs. nurture for years on end. Although more evidence is being discovered, the topic is still very arguable. The debate started back in 1869, when Francis Galton was the first to use the phrase, “Nature vs. Nurture” (ORIGINS). The debate circles around whether people are who they are from their genes, or if their environment impacts their actions and personality. Most psychologists believe it is a one or the other decision, however there are still a few who believe both are right.
