The Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6, 1862 at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee and went on for a day. The Confederate army was originally led by General Albert Johnston, but was mortally wounded and was replaced by General Beauregard and the Union army was primarily led by General Ulysses S. Grant. The shift from generals, according to Timothy B. Smith, cost the Confederate army momentum. On the morning of April 6, 1862, Colonel Everett Peabody located the Confederate army and was able to ruin the surprise attack for the Confederates. During the battle, the Union army was being driven back by Johnston’s army until he was wounded and replaced by Beauregard who stopped pushing forward. The next day, an army under the Union general, Don Carlos Buell joined Grant’s army. Together, they were able to drive back the Confederate army. Because of the victory at Pittsburg Landing, the Union are able to gain control of the Mississippi River. The Battle of Gettysburg was another bloody battle between the Union and the Confederacy. The battle was fought on July 1 through July 3, 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania primarily between General George Meade and General Lee.
