For my science project in Spain, I chose to write about bats. I was truly inspired while we were venturing into the depths of the cave in Ronda. The cave we visited was called cueva de la pileta. The cave has some interesting stories behind it, including stories about bats. I knew that I wanted to do echolocation. I decided to not only write about echolocation, but also write about different species of bats.
Bats, are mammals from the Chiroptera order. The bats forelimbs and form webbed wings, make them the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight. Unlike flying squirrels, bats can fly for long distances, while the flying squirrel can only glide short distances. There are about 1,240 different species of bats. These bat species are broken up into to different suborders, the less specialized and largely fruit-eating megabats, and the highly specialized and echolocating microbats. close to 70% of bats are insectivores, this means the bats are carnivores that primarily base their diet off of insects. Almost all of the rest are frugivores. Frugivores only eat fruit. There are several different species that consume other species rather than insects and fruit, such as The Fish Eating Bat, also known as Myotis vivesi. Myotis vivesi is found very rarely in California and the Gulf of Mexico. There is one hematophagous species of bat. This bat feeds of of blood hence the name Vampire Bat. The Vampire Bat feeds off of mammal blood, occasionally including humans. Not only are bats awesome, they perform vital ecological tasks, such as pollinating flowers and spreading fruit seeds. The largest bat species is the giant golden-crowned flying fox. The giant golden-crowned flying fox can weigh up to 4 lbs, and have a wingspan o...

...oid self deafening. The bat then uses the doppler effect to tune the echo back into its range. The doppler effect applies to objects in motion, such as a car passing by. As the car approaches the frequency of the sound is higher than the sound being emitted by the car, as the car passes the frequency is the exact same, and then the frequency gets lower as the car drives away. Bats use this to their advantage so that they can locate their prey. The doppler effect is used in radar guns as well. The bat can also use this to find how quickly their prey is moving. Because bats hunt at night to reduce the competition with birds and other flying creatures, the bat has a very good sense of smell as well as hearing. Bats can find moths by hearing the frequency of their beating wings. This allows bats to locate moths without the use of echolocation.

...al properties, the five most important being the length, diameter, weight, weight distribution, and stiffness of the bat. Bats are about six times heavier than balls and about six times lighter than a batter’s two arms. This is no mere coincidence. Tennis racquets are also about six times heavier than tennis balls. The factor of 6 is about the best ratio to ensure that energy in the batter’s arms is well coupled to the bat, and that energy in the bat is well coupled to the ball.

Mystery Cave is the only cave in Minnesota that has bats. One of the main reasons Mystery Cave has bats and Niagara Cave doesn’t is because when Niagara Cave was discovered, it was just a sinkhole in the ground and the opening was very small. No bats would have been able to enter the
A man who had to devour anything he could see. A man who had to drink water from a horse container to survive. A man who had to make his own hole for warmth. That man was Cabeza de Vaca. During Cabeza de Vaca's expedition, he shipwrecked near present day Galveston Island, Texas. This caused a life threatening situation. Cabeza de Vaca survived his eight year journey for three reasons: his wilderness skills, his success as a healer, and his respect for the Native Americans.
The Confesion de los Moriscos is a surprisingly remarkable text. It was composed during the first years of the seventeenth century, around the time, 1609, when the Moriscos were expelled from Spain. It is found in one extant Manuscript copy, dating from the second decade of the century, in a volume of Quevedo’s works that once belonged to Salazar y Castro. Astrana believed that the manuscript is autograph, thus positively attributing the Confesion to Quevedo. Crosby, on his part, questioned the paleographic ascription, consequently doubting Quevedo’s paternity of the short work. In Crosby’s words “[estas obras] son tan cortas y tan difíciles de clasificar según criterios literarios, que resulta casi imposible fundar la atribución en dichos criterios.” It is not my intent to authenticate or refute the authority of this text. Nonetheless, I hope in the next 20 minutes to show you that Confesion de los Moriscos, in spite of its brevity, is a complex text whose multi-layered readings amply make up for such conciseness. Here –an in your handouts-- it is:
The Spanish began their movement to Southwest America in the late sixteenth century. From that point on, their influence both on the Native Americans and the environment was extraordinaire. The goal of the Spaniards with regards to the Native Americans was to transform them “into tax-paying Christians.” This is in contrast to the idea that their goal was to eradicate the Indians form the Americas. Consequently, the Spaniards took many Indians so that they may plant their religion in the Natives and to use them as cheap labor. This led many Indians to learn the customs and language of the Spaniards so they could to be able to thrive in the Spanish culture. Thus, some Natives acquired Spanish, which was the main source of their Hispanicization; this was the notion of Indians becoming encompassed by the Spanish society. Furthermore, Indians gradually learned skills, obtained land, and sometimes found Hispanic spouses, thus furthering their Hispanicization. They now began to live in a Spanish manner and blend into the bottom of the Spanish societal ladder. This “acculturation” of the Native Americans was in contrast to the models of early English colonization. Spanish goals and plans sought to involve the Indians so that they may live in their society even if at the lower end of it’s ladder. English colonies viewed the Natives as savages and looked to them for slave labor or to rape their women. They did not plan to take the Indians into their society as the Spaniards did so throughout this era.

The effects that the environment in Area X has on people is also a cause of cognitive estrangement. This one is a little more difficult to assimilate to because it is so far from what we consider normal. But at the same time, these effects are what make the story so intriguing that we crave explanations, regardless of whether or not we will ever get them. It seems that Area X starts by affecting the mental state of the people who enter, “Apparently hallucinations were common (11,)” and ends with the repurposing of those same people, “But I did remember one thing, now: where I had seen the molted mask before- the psychologist from the eleventh expedition… Death, as I was beginning to understand it, was not the same thing here as it was across
The House of the Scorpion is a book about a guy named Matt Alacráno as he struggles to survive and establish his own identity. After Matt figured out that he was a clone he was moved to El Patrón’s House. While living at the mansion be befriends Tam Lin, his bodyguard, and Maria, his romantic interest. At this time clones were despised by everyone which made Matt fit in even less. The drug lord demanded that everyone
The Doppler effect (or Doppler shift) is the change in frequency of a wave for an observer moving comparative to the source of the wave. For example, if someone is standing in a street and an ambulance approaches with its siren screaming, the sound of the siren progressively increases in sound as it comes closer. Then, as it passes, the noise suddenly lowers noticeably. This is an example of the Doppler Effect: the change in the observed frequency of a wave when the source of the wave is moving to the spectator. The Doppler Effect occurs both in sound and electromagnetic waves, including light waves.
What its eating habits are: Like all members of the cat family, tigers are carnivores. The Siberian tiger hunts a wide range of prey, including small mammals, deer, water buffalo, wild pigs, and birds. Tigers ambush their prey, often camouflaging themselves and observing their intended victims for long periods of time. Siberian tigers are strong animals, able to tackle large animals almost twice their size, and render the victim helpless by inflicting a series of deadly bites into the animal's spine or throat. This semi-nocturnal animals covers 6-12 miles each night in search of food.
