The Basque Country is a region located around the west end of the Pyrenees mountain range on the coast of the Bay of Biscay . The Basque Country is comprised of the Autonomous Communities of the Basque Country(Spain), Navarre(Spain), and the Northern Basque Country(France) . The Basque people largely consider themselves to have a separate identity from the rest of Spain; they have their own language, culture, history, territory, industry, and ancestry. From their perspective, they aren't really Spanish and want this recognized. Some people though, went to extremes to express this independent feeling and that is where the conflict started. Most of their attacks included either car bombs or open armed shootouts. They occasionally assaulted banks but many of their attempted heists were unsuccessful. Normally, they targeted metropolitan areas in large cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla where they could kill the most people. Of all their horrific attacks the most significant one was in 1973 when they assassinated the Prime Minister of Spain Luis Carrero Blanco with a car bomb. After this particular attack, police and the government really began to persecute ETA. The vast majority of these attacks took place in eastern and central Spain, but many attacks also occurred in Southern France. After the first attack in Southern France, ETA were considered by the United States, Spain, and France among many other European Countries as international terrorists . This made ETA even more infamous and sought after by more countries. After this, security was tightened several metropolitan areas which led to an increase in unsuccessful attacks on ETA’s part, especially in bank robberies which resulted in the death and arrest of several important ETA officials
