Bartolomeu Dias was born in 1450. He was sent by a Portuguese King named John II to explore the coast of Africa and to find a way to the Indian Ocean. He left around August 1487 and went around the tip of Africa in January 1488. The Portuguese people named this land the Cape of Good Hope. Bartolomeu Dias got lost at sea during another trip around the Cape in 1500.

Vasco de Gama was a Portuguese explorer that was born in 1460. He was the first one to travel from Europe to India by sailing around Africa. India had very popular spices and only way to get there was by land making it very long and expensive. The king of Portugal thought that if he can find a way to India then he could become rich trading spices in Europe. In his first voyage he had 170 men and 4 ships and reached the tip of Africa on November 22.

Prince Henry the Navigator was born on 1394 and died in 1460. He was a Portuguese prince, soldier, and the father of explorers. He sent many voyages to Africa’s west coast and they helped create many maps, defeat the Muslims, establish trade routes and spread Christianity. Also during the 1400s and 1500s, prince henry helped begin the Great Age of Discovery.

King Ferdinand (January 20, 1479- January 23, 1516) was King of Aragon, Valencia, and Sicily. Ferdinand and his wife, Queen Elizabeth supported the first voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492. He is also best known for setting up the discovery of the New World.

Queen Elizabeth (December 11, 1474- November 26, 1504) was the Queen of Castile and Leon. Her coronation as queen was on December 13, 1474 in Segovia. The queen and her husband King Ferdinand brought stability to the kingdoms that became basis for the political unification of Spain.

The Incas lived in Cuzco in the Andes Mountains of South America. When another tribe tried to conquer them, Pachacuti helped them win. The Incas kept conquering tribes until their empire stretched most of western South America. The Incas invented many thins and most people were farmers.

The Economienda System was a system used by the Spanish empire to colonize different tribes. The Spanish took over people in the Caribbean, South America, and the Philippines and made them work for them.

About 400 years ago, many African people were taken to the New World in ships. They were sold into slavery and were traded for goods. Slave trade was very brutal and cruel but it gained a lot of money. Many of these slaves died on their way to the New World because they were treated very badly with very little food and water.
