There are actually many problems in the story such as, the racial problem, the upper and the lower-class problem, and also the court or justice problem. However this paper will be focusing more about the father's tendency of moving from one place to another because this is the first thing that is mentioned by Sarty in the movie.

The movie shows the condition of the Southern life more vividly. Some of the things that are not mentioned in the short story, such as how in the beginning the boy (Sarty) feels about their family who moves from one place to place a lot, and how their other family members such as the mother and the wife looks really worn out.

Another thing about the Southern life depicted in the movie is about the nature and civilization.
The Santos family, actually are willing to stay at one place, that they are okay to be treated unequally by the rich but the father does not accept that. He choose to break everything they had by simply taking a vengeance toward the rich to give them some lesson but he, whether conciously or not, had burn his family's hope instead. The boy dream at the beginning of the movie that he wishes that this time is the last time he will move away, that this time he and his family will settle, is actually burnt by the end of the movie when his father set fire to the barn again. He always started the fire to burn the barn when the conditions is too frustrating for him to bear and then he moved to other place. However then when he moved to another place, he just have to face another problem, impossible demand from the high class people and he eventually snap and do another arson. The circle of their family is never-ending, they are always moving but they are moving in the same patterns. As people who came from low class society it is evident that they want to start a new life, to be able to someday somehow become part of the high class people. Another thing is that it was also stated that the story takes place somewhere after the civil war, a war to end slavery in south, but then, the south life at the time actually has not change at all.
